One of the greatest misconceptions in education today is that certain teachers have a higher natural aptitude in technology than others.

This inspirational graphic sets out to disprove that notion and remind the audience that external skills are only a function of the internal dispositions that allowed them to grow.

The Future of Learning: Compelling, Customized, Connected & Competency-Based

The Future of Learning: Compelling, Customized, Connected & Competency-Based | Affordable Learning | Scoop.it
There is an emerging opportunity to boost student achievement and improve working for teachers here in the U.S--and a huge opportunity to expand access to quality learning to every young person on earth.

Compelling, customized (I like personalized better, but it's not a "C")' connected, and competency-based lea earning will all be a part of the future of learning. And as learners become more independent and are given an environment that supports freedom of exploration, they will also become more self-determined. Sounds like Heutagogy!

Self-Directed Learning Well Explained and 27 Actions

Self-Directed Learning Well Explained and 27 Actions | Affordable Learning | Scoop.it

TeachThought.com has a series of posts about self-directed learning by Terry Heick and the staff, well worth a read! “

“Learning is most effective when it’s personalised; it means something to the learner. That happens when people feel they are participants and investors in their own learning, shaping what and how they learn, and able to articulate its value to them.” — Leadbeater, Charles

It is interesting how few classroom teachers and administrators are aware of what self-directed learning is. SDL is an imperative for our children.

Avery's curator insight, March 25, 2013 11:56 PM

My Thoughts:

You can't teach someone how to learn. You can give them helpful tips and advice, but a single structure for education is not going to work for everyone. It's so much harder for people to learn their true potential, to reach their goals, when they're only shown a single path to them. You show them the path through the forest, but what if there's a rock face nearby that also leads up to where they want to go, and what if they happen to be a fantastic rock climber? It just makes more sense to show someone a map if you can, instead of directing them towards only one path.

Ten Disciplines of a Learner: Learning vs Mastery

Ten Disciplines of a Learner: Learning vs Mastery | Affordable Learning | Scoop.it

Ten Disciplines of a Learner
We decided to continue the conversation on this topic at a faculty meeting. Several meetings later we had a new report card. We decided to give two grades and average them—one for “Learning,” the other for “Mastery.”

Sara might get an “F” in mastery and an “A” in learning, culminating in a “C” for the course. To be rigorous we picked ten observable behaviors and named them “Disciplines of a Learner:”

1.     Asks questions
2.     Builds on other people’s ideas
3.     Uses mistakes as learning opportunities
4.     Takes criticism constructively
5.     Speaks up
6.     Welcomes a challenge
7.     Takes risks
8.     Listens with an openness to change
9.     Perseveres in tasks
10.   Decides when to lead and when to follow.

Love this examination of 'Disciplines of a Learner" that clearly distinguishes between master and learning. I think we should demonstrate greater value to the lifelong skill of learning .

Like the questions.

Elaine J Roberts, Ph.D.'s curator insight, March 22, 2:07 PM

Whether in school or the work place, we talk about measurable goals and objectives but most of us struggle to define how those goals or objectives might be measured. Now that's often because the goals and objectives aren't actually measurable, but it's mostly because we don't think through what we're actually asking students or employees to accomplish.  For students, success and progress can be measured when they see "that [their] learning, not [their] intelligence" matters. For  employees, success and progress can be measured in much the same way.

This post is really relevant to my education, because recently (in project and english) I have needed to make blogs or an online presentation for class. This infographic displays the benefits of using a slightly obscure (honestly, a bit like scoop.it) medium to do so. It offers a very reasonable argument for why to use their site for projects in class. I might even use Pinterest for my upcoming english project.
