Despite the headline this is not your usual slacktivism criticism but an interesting article on human behavior and the attention economy. However, there seems to be a confusion between sympathy and empathy. What the author calls empathy is actually sympathy - sympathy with the suffering - and pity. This does not foster a sustained interest in the topic. Empathy on the other hand is the outcome of identification and does lead to action.
