More than half of the people over age 45 underestimate how long they
will live, which can have major consequences for retirement planning,
according to a survey by the Society of Actuaries.

64% of people that have already retired and 73% of people planning on retiring soon claim that they would be at least somewhat likely to make a change in regards to the way they manage their money if they were guaranteed to live those five extra years that the normal person is off by. More than half of pre-retirees would also use money they otherwise would have left to heirs (58%) or downsize their housing (55%).

More than half of the people over age 45 underestimate how long they
will live, which can have major consequences for retirement planning,
according to a survey by the Society of Actuaries.
Austin Zagorac's insight:

A slight majority of retired people believe they will not live as long as the average person of their age and gender, while 31% think they will live longer than the average. For people that have not yet retired, 46% think they will live fewer years than the average while 41% feel they will longer. They survey included 800 retirees and 800 pre-retirees.

Better management of the way that money is spent is usually a process used to reduce the way the money is spent, says the survey. The problem with this is that most of the retired people already use ways to have reduced expenditures. In this unstable economy, many people have already been taking steps to reduce expenditures, especially when it comes to their home and home equity.

However, most people tend to not realize that the average life expectancy is no guarantee, but simply an estimate based on studies and is only the middle ground. Life expectancy for a newborn American male improved from 66.6 years in 1960 to 75.7 years in 2010, and for females newborns, from 73.1 in 1960 to 80.8 in 2010.

Most American adults that have reached 45 think they might not have too much time left however, their expected age is often overestimated. which can have major consequences for retirement planning, according to a survey by the Society of Actuaries.
Most of these same people also admit to a want for changing their lifestyle, if it meant that they would live at least 5 years longer according to a survey Managing the Risks of Retirement.
