Case study: Heineken turns ‘likes’ into balloons… and gets thousands of fans in a day - Digital marketing case study from the Digital Training Academy - Going beyond the usual ‘like us a we’ll give you a discount’ tactic of many brands, Heineken offered to inflate one green balloon in its office for every new 'like' it got on its Brazilian fan page. The simple execution proved to be incredibly effective- gaining thousands fans in just one day. The campaign called ‘Um Like Um Balao’ (One Like One Balloon) for every time someone likes the page, a green balloon was blown up and placed in a office. Starting off with an empty office, the space was quickly filled up with select users getting custom videos of a man blowing up a balloon and the total number of balloons covering the room.

Being a young marketer, I have begun to take on several small projects of my own as they relate to brand equity. I found this article from Design Juice to be particularly interesting for this very reason. Most consumers believe it is easy to create a logo and build brand loyalty but the truth of the matter is that building a brand from the bottom up takes serious strategic planning. Branding, whether in the context of a small or larger company, is about expressing an established mission to the consumer that appears better than that of the competitors. The article identifies five mistakes companies tend to make when building brand equity- all of which I will be taking into consideration as I work on my next branding project. The first mistake is not understanding brand power. This is crucial since the brand strength directly correlates to value and in turn, profit. The second mistake was forgetting establishment of defined brand guidelines. The guidelines should consist of logo, taglines, brand fonts and color schemes that match the overall message and identity of the brand as a whole. These aspects are the visual components of the brand and are usually the first pieces introduced to the consumer. The third mistake is over-complicating the brand. Sticking to lean and simple text and visuals are always better. The fourth mistake is diluting the brand by use of vague language. The current company I am working with has the exact issue (“World’s Best Kettle Corn”). The final mistake is constant campaign reinvention. Brands need to stick with one unified brand look and maintain it account the whole business ecosystem. Overall, this article has helped me understand the next steps in building brand equity for my clients.
