The latest Global AdView Pulse report issued by Nielsen shows total spending of $139 billion, a 4.3 percent increase in Q3 2012 ad spending over Q3 2011. This increase outpaced the 2.7 percent growth in the first half of 2012.

 

Digital advertising was the major beneficiary of ad growth last year. Worldwide digital ad spending in all categories reached $102.83 billion in 2012, a 17.8 percent increase over 2011, according  to eMarketer. Double digit growth was evident in all regions, with the highest growth over the previous year in the Middle East and Africa (47.9 percent), Latin America (37 percent) and Asia Pacific (25 percent),  Of all countries, Indonesia experienced the highest digital advertising growth rate (55 percent).

Overall, mobile ad prices rose over 50 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, but advertisers paid most for ads on iPads: $1.12 per thousand impressions. iOS ad prices in general rose 66 percent, while ads on Android devices became 54 percent more expensive.

A 21-nation survey conducted by the Pew Research Center‟s Global Attitudes Project demonstrated the popularity of social networks across the globe and the increasingly important role of smartphones in accessing them.

 

The research also demonstrated often unique – or pronounced cultural sensibilities reflected on social networks.

 

Users of social networking in Tunisia (63%), Egypt (63%) and Jordan (62%) are also more likely than those in other countries to say they have posted on religion.

UAE retained its ranking as the top advertising market in the region for 2012 with some ease, with an ad spend totalling $1.58 billion against the $1.44 billion in 2011. In second spot was Saudi Arabia ($1.42 billion from an 8 per cent growth) and Egypt (which recorded a 17 per cent gain to $1.12 billion despite the tense political situation during the better part of the year), according to data consolidated by Pan Arab Research Centre (Parc).

Social media has topped the list of most visited websites in the Saudi Arabia with YouTube leading the pack, Facebook in third place and Twitter in sixth.

A recent study researched the main social media usage in the Kingdom on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn and found out that the excessive access of users from the Kingdom has increased the use of Arabic in social media making it the fastest growing language currently on the internet. The Kingdom tops the list of Middle East countries when it comes to involvement in the social media in most of the statistics.

 

Twitter usage in the Kingdom grew ‘10 times’ the world average.

Although some brands over the years have been skeptical about how social media can bring in revenue, a new study reveals social commerce sales are expected to bring in $30 billion each year by 2015, with half of web sales to occur through social media.

 

According to the data, Facebook drives 26% of referral traffic to business websites and those numbers are only expected to increase. About 20% of shoppers already prefer buying products through a brand's Facebook page compared to its website.

 

Although Facebook users still use the platform largely for personal use, one in three businesses embrace it to reach out to consumers. Nearly 10 million registered small businesses have a Facebook presence, and 89% of agencies use the social network to advertise for their business clients.

Fans who follow brands on Facebook are also more likely to purchase items from the company than non-fans. With that in mind, about 89% of small businesses believe Facebook is a valuable marketing tool for their brand.

For the average page, that’s just one out of six fans you’re reaching. Five out of six of your fans aren’t seeing you at all.

Your page is worth 83 percent less than what you think if, like many business owners or brand executives, you’re only looking at your total fan base count.

And whatever you spent to acquire your average fan, multiply that by six, because five out of six of your fans aren’t seeing your posts.

Based on 52 countires, the world's gdp is continuing to decline. The U.S was already obvious, but the world is following the U.S in its foreboding trails. Global growth fell by .4 percentage points until it reached 2.4 percent. Developed countries contributed a bit. There are emerging countries with growing economies too.

The Middle East and North Africa have among the lowest penetration of internet users in the world, but the online population is young and growing fast. For these connected youth, access offers opportunity—from education to entertainment.

Google and Booz & Co. surveyed internet users between the ages of 15 and 35 (an age range believed to make up 40% of the population) in Saudia Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, Algeria and Lebanon. The results showed a digitally engaged population with room to bring technology further into their lives and society.

 

Overall, 83% of these internet users reported using the internet daily. And when users went online, they stuck around, with 99% of daily users spending over 30 minutes online, well above the 82% who spent over 30 minutes watching TV. More than four in 10 users spent at least five hours per day on the internet.

As of December 31, 2012, the Middle East had 23,811,620 Facebook subscribers, which is a penetration rate of 10.6%. But while one out of 10 people possess an account in the region, the story varies between countries. Iraq's user base is just over 2.5 million, an 8.2% penetration rate, while social media hungry UAE clocks in with 3.4 million users, giving it a 41.7% penetration rate.

 

But is Facebook destined for an eventual decline in the Middle East? We don't think so!!

There are currently 72.5 million internet users across Mena and the Gulf Cooperation Council predicts B2C e-commerce sales will reach around $15bn by 2015. The current total value of offline retail is approximately $425bn - over 28 times as much as online revenues.

The UAE has the highest percentage of internet users who shop online, compared to the rest of the Middle East. B2C sales growth for UAE e-commerce was $2bn in 2010 - 55% to 60% of total GCC e-commerce sales. Saudi Arabia is the second largest e-commerce market, worth an estimated $520m, followed by Qatar ($375m), Kuwait ($280m), Bahrain ($175m) and Oman ($70m).

According to one study, 92% of mobile video viewers also share videos with others. In fact, 16% of respondents said they share mobile video every day.

A study shows video viewing on mobile devices is very closely related to video-sharing. In the survey of 200 mobile video viewers, 92% said that they share mobile video content with others.

 

The most popular method of sharing listed by respondents was through posts on Facebook or similar social sites (56%). But a lower-tech method of sharing was also quite popular with respondents: 44% said they share videos simply by passing their mobile device off to a friend.

According to a new eMarketer forecast, worldwide mobile ad spending more than doubled last year and is set to continue fast-paced increases through 2016. Last year’s growth was led by the US as well as emerging markets around the world.

Mobile ad spending around the world more than doubled last year, according to eMarketer estimates, and though growth will be moderate this year, double-digit increases in mobile ad spending will continue in coming years as outlays approach $37 billion by 2016.

 

In 2012, mobile spending was at $8.41 billion, according to eMarketer’s forecast—up from just over $4 billion the year before and $2.34 billion in 2010. eMarketer’s estimates of worldwide mobile ad spending include dollars going toward display and search advertising only, and exclude spending on messaging-based formats. Spending on tablets is also included.

Even usage of the photo-sharing tool Instagram, purchased by Facebook in April of 2012, has increased 1,179% in six months.
