The UAE’s smartphone ownership is strong, with a 73 per cent penetration and most consumers looking to upgrade devices. Mobile internet usage in the UAE is currently outstripping Mena regional and worldwide averages which remain at 41 per cent and 51 per cent, respectively.

Jailing Arab Twitter users could lead to greater physical action such as violent protests, a Google executive has told Arabian Business in an exclusive interview.

 

Ross LaJeunesse, global head of Google's Freedom Expression project, said the silencing of controversial social media comments would only lead to boiled up tensions that would eventually need to be released.

Overall ad revenue from Europe, Middle East, and Africa countries (EMEA) will rise 3.3% in 2014.

 

The second-biggest country -- Japan -- will get to $51.7 billion in 2013 and $53.2 billion in 2014. China, in third place, will total $42.8 billion this year and $48.0 billion next year.

 

Worldwide digital media will continue to be a major part of overall advertising growth -- up 13.4% to $113.6 billion in 2013. Also for this year, digital search will climb 14.6% to $52 billion; digital video will rise 21% to $6.6 billion; mobile advertising will be 54% higher to $12 billion; and social media will rocket up 39.6% to reach $8.2 billion.

Half of all active users in region from Saudi Arabia, Facebook also sees 22% growth in past year

The number of Twitter users in the Arab world has leapt by 85 percent to 3.7 million in the last year, with over half of all active users of the site based in Saudi Arabia, according to new research.

 

The Arab Social Media report, released on Saturday by the Dubai School of Government (DSG), also reveals that the kingdom is also the source of 47 percent of all tweets in the region.
