Internet advertising in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is forecast to be worth $1.04 billion by 2017, trebling its 2012 market value, according to a study published this week by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

 

Spending in the region’s online advertising industry is predicted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28 percent, according to the latest edition of PwC’s ‘Global Entertainment and Media Outlook’.

 

PwC said that the rapid growth would be “due to fast-increasing internet penetration, growing average disposable incomes in the GCC countries and online retailing trending quickly in the UAE, Egypt and the Levant.”

Global media services network ZenithOptimedia has said the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region is witnessing a substantial increase in interest from international and domestic advertisers and the advertising expenditure is expected to grow 5.5% in 2013. The ad spend will climb to 6.8% in 2014 and 8.9% in 2015, the firm said.

Mobile ad revenue worldwide increased sharply last year, rising 82.8% to $8.9 billion last year from $5.3 billion in 2011. Growth was highest in North America, at 111%, followed by Western Europe (91%), Latin America (71%), Central Europe (69%), the Middle East and Africa (68%), and Asia-Pacific (60%).

A new comprehensive survey from the Arab Advisors Group probed the media consumption habits in Iraq. The survey revealed that news, reality shows and Arabic series are the most popular types of TV programs watched in the country.

The survey also revealed that the vast majority of respondents who watch TV prefer to watch it in Arabic.

The UAE's smartphone ownership is strong, with a 73% penetration and most consumers looking to upgrade devices, according to Steve Hamilton-Clark, CEO of TNS MENA one of the world's largest custom market research organisations.Hamilton-Clark predicts usage of more advanced features and apps is set to explode as mobile internet use grows. "Mobile internet usage in the UAE is currently outstripping MENA regional and worldwide averages which remain at 41% and 51% respectively," he said.

A Public Relations study reveals the results of a corporate reputation study commissioned earlier this year which looks at how corporate reputation affects consumers in Bahrain.

According to the study conducted with AMRB, one of the leading market research agencies in the MENA region, companies are risking as much as BD3.6bn between them by not investing in their reputations following the revelation that 88% of respondents have based buying decisions purely on an organization's reputation.

UAE's tablet computer market is set to outpace the PC (portable and desktop) market in 2017, due to remarkable growth from the home segment and aided by steady expansion in the commercial segment as well, Gulf News has reported. The tablet market will cross one million units this year to 1.27 million units, compared with 619,770 units in 2012, registering a growth of 104.91%. In 2017, total tablet sales are expected to be 2.39 million as opposed to 2.32 million computers.

New research from the Arab Advisors Group analyzes and compares the social media presence of 40 Free-to-Air satellite channels in the Arab World.


By mid-June 2013, news and current affairs channels BBC World, Al Arabiya and Al Jazeera English took the lead in the number of Twitter followers, while MBC Group had the highest number of YouTube subscribers on its channel. The research revealed high levels of adoption of social media platforms by the 40 analyzed Free-to-Air satellite channels, in line with the increasing levels of adoption of social media among Internet users in the Arab world.
