Half of all active users in region from Saudi Arabia, Facebook also sees 22% growth in past year

The number of Twitter users in the Arab world has leapt by 85 percent to 3.7 million in the last year, with over half of all active users of the site based in Saudi Arabia, according to new research.

 

The Arab Social Media report, released on Saturday by the Dubai School of Government (DSG), also reveals that the kingdom is also the source of 47 percent of all tweets in the region.

According to a survey by Silah Gulf which identified 70% of the respondents monitored social channels, but less than 5% have integrated social media into other customer interaction channels such as their call centre. While some organisations refute social media's influence, others recognise its impact, have appointed specialist teams to understand, monitor and plan a suitable response. Those who ignore social media do so at their peril.

 

As per the latest data: 51% of companies acquire customers through social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and a Company blog. 79% of online shoppers spend at least 50% of their shopping time researching products.

Social media saw tremendous growth in 2012 – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and other channels all reached major milestones – and for business to business (B2B) brands, it’s never been more important to be involved.

And many are already paying attention. 64 percent of B2B companies are currently investing in social media marketing, with Facebook (83 percent), Twitter and LinkedIn (80 percent) their platforms of choice, and almost half (48.7 percent) plan to increase their social media budgets this year.

Despite a majority of site visits coming from Facebook, for B2B small and medium-sized businesses, more than 80% of social media leads come from Twitter.

For B2B small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), Facebook is for traffic, and Twitter is for leads.The study, which parsed over 62 million site visits, 215 million page views and 350,000 leads in 2012, found that visitors coming from Facebook made up 54% of all social media-sourced site visits, and those from Twitter just 32%. Twitter accounted for 82% of all social media-originated leads, while Facebook accounted for a paltry 9% of leads. LinkedIn played a relatively minor role, accounting for 14% of site visits from social and 9% of social leads.

Social media has topped the list of most visited websites in the Saudi Arabia with YouTube leading the pack, Facebook in third place and Twitter in sixth.

A recent study researched the main social media usage in the Kingdom on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn and found out that the excessive access of users from the Kingdom has increased the use of Arabic in social media making it the fastest growing language currently on the internet. The Kingdom tops the list of Middle East countries when it comes to involvement in the social media in most of the statistics.

 

Twitter usage in the Kingdom grew ‘10 times’ the world average.

Digital media will more than double its share of the Arab world's advertising market by 2015, according to a recent study by Deloitte. Its Arab Media Outlook said digital is the fastest growing media platform in the region and accounted for four percent of the total advertising spend in 2011.

 

Deloitte said it expects digital to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35 percent over the next three years, generating about $580 million across the region by 2015.

Middle East boasts one of the world’s most engaged Twitter audiences, according to a large global study of Twitter behavior.

 

Saudi Arabia, 51% of internet users surveyed were active Twitter users, putting it in first place worldwide.

 

United Arab Emirates ranked third, with 34% of internet users actively using the social network.

 

The number of active Twitter users worldwide increased by 62 million between Q3 2012 and Q4 2012 to 288 million, an increase of 39.8%.

 

Saudi Arabia generated fully 29% of all Tweets in the Middle East region, second only to Kuwait.

Social media has long been synonymous with “owned” or “earned” media -- the kind you don’t actually pay for. But a new survey commissioned by Nielsen unit Vizu indicates that three-quarters of advertisers are spending on paid social advertising and nearly two-thirds (64%) plan to increase their social ad budgets this year.
 
That’s welcome news to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others as they ramp up paid ad opportunities on their respective platforms. Still, social media budgets remain relatively small. Last year, the vast majority (70%) of companies earmarked 1% to 10% of overall ad spending to social media, with only 13% allotting 21% or more.
