At least one in three people in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) watch 3 to 5 hours of television every day during Ramadan compared to the regional average of *3.1 hours throughout the rest of the year.

Egypt led the region with more than 37 per cent watching 3 to 5 hours of TV, 26 per cent spending 1 to 3 hours and 15 per cent hooked to their entertainment for 5 to 7 hours each day. In Saudi Arabia, 33% spend 3 to 5 hours every day, while in UAE and Kuwait, 32 and 30 per cent, respectively, dedicate 3 to 5 hours for TV viewing.

On demand TV has been launched on smart phones for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa, with the region’s leading pay TV company OSN. An app for OSN Play, which allows subscribers to watch content at any time from their computer or tablet device, is now available on the iPhone and iPod Touch via wifi.

Overall ad revenue from Europe, Middle East, and Africa countries (EMEA) will rise 3.3% in 2014.

 

The second-biggest country -- Japan -- will get to $51.7 billion in 2013 and $53.2 billion in 2014. China, in third place, will total $42.8 billion this year and $48.0 billion next year.

 

Worldwide digital media will continue to be a major part of overall advertising growth -- up 13.4% to $113.6 billion in 2013. Also for this year, digital search will climb 14.6% to $52 billion; digital video will rise 21% to $6.6 billion; mobile advertising will be 54% higher to $12 billion; and social media will rocket up 39.6% to reach $8.2 billion.

The proportion of Arab satellite channels which are privately owned has reached 73.3%, with 25.8% being government-owned, according to a report released by media research company Discover Digital Arabia.

 

The remaining channels, roughly 1%, are jointly-owned ventures.

The report also stated that 78.6% of all stations are broadcast in Arabic, with 4.6% broadcasting in English, 4.4% broadcasting in both languages, and the remaining 12.4% in other languages.

 

The report further stated that since October 2012, 4G telecommunication networks were most commonly used in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

According to research group IDATE, global video and television revenues are expected to grow from €392bn in 2012 to €483bn in 2017, Digital TV Europe has reported. Advertising revenue will see even stronger growth, according to the group, rising by 25.8% to reach €191.4bn. Linear TV will continue to generate 91% of income, while Video-on-Demand will represent 7% of the total video market by 2017, the report said. Total VOD revenues will amount to €34bn, with Over-The-Top Content (OTT) services representing 74% of the total, it said.

Advertising rates have reached US$5,448 for peak viewing time in the Arab world's free-to-air (FTA) satellite TV sector, with news and current affairs commanding the highest value for commercial spots.

 

Jordan's Arab Advisors Group analysed 34 FTA satellite channels in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and discovered there it cost, on average, $3,157 for a 30-second TV advertisement during the peak viewing time between 9pm and 10pm in Saudi Arabia's time zone.
