Twitter is approximately 62% engagement, 38% broadcast. Females are also more likely to retweet than males, but replies were 18% more often authored by males.

Facebook has made major strides on mobile in the past year and data on advertising revenues reflect that effort.
Ali Sajid's insight:

In 2012 one in five advertiser dollars on Facebook went to mobile.

 

Breaking down how that mobile spending was distributed by devices, smartphones and Android received the bulk of Facebook ad spend, at 71%, while on tablets, nearly all Facebook mobile advertising revenues went to iOS devices. This parallels Android’s dominance in the worldwide smartphone market, while Apple’s iPad remains the tablet standard-bearer.

The Middle East and North Africa have among the lowest penetration of internet users in the world, but the online population is young and growing fast. For these connected youth, access offers opportunity—from education to entertainment.
Ali Sajid's insight:

Google and Booz & Co. surveyed internet users between the ages of 15 and 35 (an age range believed to make up 40% of the population) in Saudia Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, Algeria and Lebanon. The results showed a digitally engaged population with room to bring technology further into their lives and society.

 

Overall, 83% of these internet users reported using the internet daily. And when users went online, they stuck around, with 99% of daily users spending over 30 minutes online, well above the 82% who spent over 30 minutes watching TV. More than four in 10 users spent at least five hours per day on the internet.

Social media has topped the list of most visited websites in the Saudi Arabia with YouTube leading the pack, Facebook in third place and Twitter in sixth.

A recent study researched the main social media usage in the Kingdom on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn and found out that the excessive access of users from the Kingdom has increased the use of Arabic in social media making it the fastest growing language currently on the internet. The Kingdom tops the list of Middle East countries when it comes to involvement in the social media in most of the statistics.

 

Twitter usage in the Kingdom grew ‘10 times’ the world average.

80% plan to budget for production of visual content in 2013.

 

96.7% believe that visual content engages best on social media

Despite a majority of site visits coming from Facebook, for B2B small and medium-sized businesses, more than 80% of social media leads come from Twitter.

For B2B small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), Facebook is for traffic, and Twitter is for leads.The study, which parsed over 62 million site visits, 215 million page views and 350,000 leads in 2012, found that visitors coming from Facebook made up 54% of all social media-sourced site visits, and those from Twitter just 32%. Twitter accounted for 82% of all social media-originated leads, while Facebook accounted for a paltry 9% of leads. LinkedIn played a relatively minor role, accounting for 14% of site visits from social and 9% of social leads.

Social media has long been synonymous with “owned” or “earned” media -- the kind you don’t actually pay for. But a new survey commissioned by Nielsen unit Vizu indicates that three-quarters of advertisers are spending on paid social advertising and nearly two-thirds (64%) plan to increase their social ad budgets this year.
 
That’s welcome news to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others as they ramp up paid ad opportunities on their respective platforms. Still, social media budgets remain relatively small. Last year, the vast majority (70%) of companies earmarked 1% to 10% of overall ad spending to social media, with only 13% allotting 21% or more.

The biggest growth in digital advertising is happening outside of so-called mature markets. In particular, digital ad spending grew 55.8% in the Middle East and Africa in 2012 and 38.4% in Eastern Europe compared to 21.5% and 13.9% for North America and Western Europe, respectively.

Although some brands over the years have been skeptical about how social media can bring in revenue, a new study reveals social commerce sales are expected to bring in $30 billion each year by 2015, with half of web sales to occur through social media.

 

According to the data, Facebook drives 26% of referral traffic to business websites and those numbers are only expected to increase. About 20% of shoppers already prefer buying products through a brand's Facebook page compared to its website.

 

Although Facebook users still use the platform largely for personal use, one in three businesses embrace it to reach out to consumers. Nearly 10 million registered small businesses have a Facebook presence, and 89% of agencies use the social network to advertise for their business clients.

Fans who follow brands on Facebook are also more likely to purchase items from the company than non-fans. With that in mind, about 89% of small businesses believe Facebook is a valuable marketing tool for their brand.
