Paper on Arab internet usage released

UAE scores high on use of e-government services and use of mobile devices

According to a report by Telecommunication Regulation Authority (TRA), the number of users who access the internet through mobile devices is expected to rise dramatically in the next few years.

 

The report also surveyed 3,373 residents of 22 Arab countries of which 76 per cent were male and 24 per cent were female; 48 per cent of the sample was in the 15-29 age group.

 

The report showed that 71 per cent of Arabs use the internet as an alternative to traditional communication, 28 per cent prefer social media as the primary source of news, which matches the preferences for traditional media, while 29 per cent have never used any electronic government services.

Qatar’s government entity under the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology in its latest report titled ‘Qatar’s ICT Landscape 2013: Households and Individuals‘ has revealed that Qatar’s Internet penetration is among the best in the Arab region and on par with ICT-advanced countries like South Korea and the UK.

More than half of mainstream individuals own a smartphone, with the highest penetration levels among young people

Social media continues to grow rapidly, offering global consumers new and meaningful ways to engage with the people, events and brands that matter to them.  According to Nielsen and NM Incite’s latest Social Media Report, consumers continue to spend more time on social networks than on any other category of sites—roughly 20 percent of their total time online via personal computer (PC), and 30 percent of total time online via mobile.

A new infographic reveals social commerce sales are expected to bring in $30 billion each year by 2015, with 50% of web sales to occur through social media.

Although some brands over the years have been skeptical about how social media can bring in revenue, a new study reveals social commerce sales are expected to bring in $30 billion each year by 2015, with half of web sales to occur through social media.

 

According to the data, Facebook drives 26% of referral traffic to business websites and those numbers are only expected to increase. About 20% of shoppers already prefer buying products through a brand's Facebook page compared to its website.

 

Although Facebook users still use the platform largely for personal use, one in three businesses embrace it to reach out to consumers. Nearly 10 million registered small businesses have a Facebook presence, and 89% of agencies use the social network to advertise for their business clients.

Fans who follow brands on Facebook are also more likely to purchase items from the company than non-fans. With that in mind, about 89% of small businesses believe Facebook is a valuable marketing tool for their brand.
