‘Stop GMOs’: Russian scientists urge 10-year ban on genetically modified products

‘Stop GMOs’: Russian scientists urge 10-year ban on genetically modified products | GMOs | Scoop.it

Russian scientists are calling for a 10-year moratorium on GMOs to thoroughly study their influence on human health, stressing that such examinations are vital.

"It is necessary to ban GMO, to impose a moratorium for 10 years. While GMO will be prohibited, we can plan experiments, tests, or maybe even new methods of research could be developed,” vice president of Russia’s National Association for Genetic Safety, Irina Ermakova, told Interfax news agency.

According to her, there have not been sufficient studies on GMO influence on human health to allow for a wide introduction of genetically modified food on the market...

NON-GMO HYBRID ACHIEVES BETTER YIELD

Spectrum™ Premium Non-GMO seed provides what many others cannot by KC Kinder, Freelance Writer It has been said that a man has not truly lived until he has lived for something.
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Non-GMO hybrid achieves substantially higher yields. This is actually not news, nevertheless good news on the corn front. The most dangerous adverse effect of herbicide tolerant seeds is that the use of glyphosate immobilises soil and prevents roots from nutrient uptake, particularly magnesium. Glyphosate also kills other living organisms in the soil.

Dr Dough Gurien Sherman, reviewing 20 year data also came to the conclusion that GM seeds DO NOT  increase yield.

Arun Shrivastava's insight:

GM seeds come packaged with Roundup herbicide or glyphosate. The lethal pesticide residue can't be washed off. The adverse impact on human health has been studied extensively now and a short list is given below. The pesticide also compromises the plants' ability to draw certain nutrients; effectively it kills the living soil.

Acute poisoning with glyphosate-containing herbicides is approximately 7.7% from the available studies.

Extreme Toxicity of Roundup Destroys GM/Non-GM 'Substantial Equivalence' Argument

Extreme Toxicity of Roundup Destroys GM/Non-GM 'Substantial Equivalence' Argument | GMOs | Scoop.it

If Monsanto's Roundup herbicide were actually 'safer than table salt' as they once advertised, the consumption of GM food wouldn't be nearly as controversial.

The truth, however, is that virtually all GM food today contains residues of this toxic chemical.

Incidentally, this disproves that GM and non-GM foods are 'substantially equivalent," which is the primary doctrinal justification behind why GM foods are not properly safety tested...

Via Sepp Hasslberger
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Ask this question: Is natural, organically grown food "substantially equivalent: to Genetically Engineered Foods? If not, which characteristics are different? Which characteristics are harmful to humans and animals?

Based on hard evidences from countless studies, today we know that no manufactured food can be 'SUBSTANTIALLY EQUIVALENT" to natural, unprocessed foods.

It was well established by early 1980s that Green Revolution technologies had poisoned our foods [pesticide residues] and our foods had lost vital nutritive content. By 1990s, it was clear that many vital nutrients had simply disappeared from our common foods like milk, meat, vegetables, fruits, even cereals.

And now the world is faced with Genetically Engineered foods. With these foods, you simply can't wash the poison off because the food itself is poisonous, each cell is poisonous; plant roots are poisonous, leaves are poisonous, stems are poisonous.

Sepp Hasslberger's curator insight, December 3, 2013 2:10 PM

When asking for genetically modified seeds to be approved, the companies have a trick. They say those seeds (and the fruits that grow from them) are "substantially equivalent" to the natural variety.

They say, in other words, that there is no discernible difference between GMO and natural.

Which of course is not true. Now in addition to this, most GM crops are engineered to withstand Monsanto's glyphosate poison weed killer Roundup, which is sprayed on the fields and ends up on your plate.

So much for substantial equivalence.

Monica S Mcfeeters's curator insight, December 4, 2013 9:17 PM

Well this is a pretty good argument for why GM food is not the same as or so called "Substantially equivalent" to the natural or organic variety of plants.

I have a collection of vital papers from Irina but for the time being readers may refer to this generalist article from Jeffrey, here in which he uses photographs of Irina's lab rats:

Russia under Putin has taken full control over its scientific establishments. Putin has perhaps already warned the western devilish leaders that they risk a full scale war if they don't stop this GMO business.

India under the brain-dead and spineless Prime Minister has totally compromised its scientific establishment. In a recent address in a national scientific institution he said that "without nuclear power and GMOs India can't progress." Insanity manifests itself in many ways. This man is plain INSANE.

New Reasons to Run Away From GMOs - National Health Federation

New Reasons to Run Away From GMOs - National Health Federation | GMOs | Scoop.it

Are genetically modified (GM) foods making you sick – I mean really sick?

Up until recently, all we could say was, thank goodness you’re not a lab rat; GM feed messes themup big time. GMOs (genetically modified organisms) appear to trigger the immune systems of both mice and rats as if they were under attack.

In addition, the gastrointestinal system is adversely affected, animals show signs of accelerated aging, and vital organs are damaged.  Lab animals can also become infertile, have smaller or sterile offspring, increased infant mortality, and even hair growing in their mouths.

Have I got your attention?

Via Sepp Hasslberger
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Thanks, Sepp. The article advances our understanding of the cumulative effect of eating GM foods on our body. Effectively, we have been forced to be the lab rats of multinational seeds and food corporations.

Arun Shrivastava's insight:

I know many of the characters in the film but Mahesh Bhatt has done a reasonably good job in putting together a documentary. It was possibly made in 2007-08 when some vital test results were not available. Therefore, it is now dated. However, worth watching.
