Former Pro-GMO Scientist Speaks Out On The Real Dangers of Genetically Engineered Food
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Thierry Vrain says,"The Bt corn   and soya plants that are now everywhere in our environment are   registered as insecticides. But are these insecticidal plants regulated   and have their proteins been tested for safety? Not by the federal   departments in charge of food safety, not in Canada and not in the U.S." NOTE: GM FOODS ARE REGISTERED AS PESTICIDES.

Now, last year Dr. Seralini completed his two-year long feeding studies and the findings are terrifying. All animals fed GM foods died of vital organ failure and cancers. The industry fraudsters had normally confined their studies to 90 days; Dr Seralini wanted it done over the life cycle of 760+days. He found that major symptoms of lethal diseases appeared from 120th day onward, that is on completion of 15% of the normal life span.

A human can be assumed to live around 80 years; so, the harmful effects of Genetically Engineered foods should appear after about 12th year of ingestion.

Now, since 70% of super market foods in the US are genetically engineered, and these foods were introduced in 1993 without biosafety tests, the fear is not unfounded that majority of Americans are very, very sick, especially the poor.

As far as India is concerned: PM Man Mohan Singh and Ag-Minister Sharad Pawar want Indians to eat GM foods. Many years ago I had written that the Parliament's canteen should serve only GM foods for five years. If the MPs survive, we have no problem; if they are all dead good riddance for promoting a dangerous technology, essentially forcing upon us foods that are registered as pesticides.

A leaked study examining genetically-modified corn reveals that the lab-made alternative to organic crops contains a startling level of toxic chemicals.
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

The article is based on the findings of the 2012 Corn Comparison Report by Profit Pro and one of the things that attracted my attention was that Glyphosate chelates mnerals. Consequently, the root uptake of crucial nutrients is immobilised. I had written about this process by which all Genetically Engineered foods are rendered nutrition deficient. AND, simultaneously, poisonous.

Is Genetically Engineered Salmon Safe and Ethical? Corporations Creating Life?

Is Genetically Engineered Salmon Safe and Ethical? Corporations Creating Life? | Adverse Health Effects of Genetically Engineered Foods | Scoop.it

January 22, 2013 Global Possibilities

There are massively disturbing ethical, environmental, and health concerns that make the introduction of Frankenfish highly controversial...

Frankenfish could be on your dinner plate by the end of the year.

On December 21, at the very end of the last business day before Christmas week, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) quietly released its environmental assessment that found “no significant impact” from the controversial AquaBounty AquaAdvantage transgenic salmon.,,

What is the rationale behind genetically engineered salmon? Why have scientists spliced genes from an eel-like creature called the ocean pout into the genome of the Atlantic salmon? These genes crank out growth hormone year-round, resulting in a fish that grows faster, cutting the time to reach market weight almost in half. This could mean cost savings for fish farmers, leading to higher profits for the salmon farming industry and (they promise) lower prices for consumers.

Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Some years ago I saw a YouTube discussion on Genetically Engineered salmon where a private firm was advocating genetic engineering of the fish and its advantages. Actually they were interested in profits, nothing else.

The fish grows to three times in weight as compared to the natural salmon in half the time. Salmon's breeding grounds are rivers and salmon eats anything that moves. Did this private company ever conducted a single biosafety test to ensure their engineered salmon's impact on Natural environment and aquatic life? I don't think so.

The posting has many useful links; please explore that.

Impact on Oceans and Wild Salmon !

AquaBounty, the company behind the first Frankenfish, insists that their creation poses no threat to wild salmon populations. But research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that a release of just sixty GE salmon into a wild population of 60,000 would lead to the extinction of the wild population in less than 40 fish generations.

TESTBIOTECH%20Cultivation_GE_%20plants_US.pdf

Arun Shrivastava's insight:

This is a good report summarising the various facets of Genetically Engineered seeds and food crops. Its recommendations are practical and implementable. The study was sponsored by Green Party of Germany

Recall that in 1974, in an international conference, top biotech scientists gathered to discuss the long term implication of GE of life forms. They were all brilliant scientists and cared and a decision was taken not to commercialise it until the possible adverse impacts on human and environmental health have been understood properly. In 1979, Dr Ananda Chakraborty developed an oil-eating bacteria and sought patent protection. Eventually the US-Supreme Court granted them patent protection. This was the first time in history that patent was granted on life form.

That judgement paved the way for patenting of seeds. The big chemical multinationals-Monsanto, Bayer, Dow, Syngenta, etc, jumped into patenting seeds. Today, over 95% of biotechnologists work for these criminal corporations and they are the ones who sponsor research projects on new plant varieties or new life forms. The scientists are now colluding with these corporations who have weaponized our food system.

US farmers may stop planting GMs after poor global yields

US farmers may stop planting GMs after poor global yields | Adverse Health Effects of Genetically Engineered Foods | Scoop.it

Some US farmers are considering returning to conventional seed after increased pest resistance and crop failures meant GM crops saw smaller yields globally than their non-GM counterparts.

Farmers in the USA pay about an extra $100 per acre for GM seed, and many are questioning whether they will continue to see benefits from using GMs.

"It's all about cost benefit analysis," said economist Dan Basse, president of American agricultural research company AgResource.

Via Sepp Hasslberger, Arun Shrivastava
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Please note that GM foods not only affect our health but destroy soil health. This has been known for some years. The root hairs of a plant are the most predatory living system, expanding to 16 miles every day every day to obtain vital nutrients from the soil. These root hairs interact with soil living organisms [the billions of bacteira and micro, meso and macro organisms. This interaction can transfer altered gene because horizontal [cross specie] contamination is a well established fact.

Dr Huber, an Ag-scientist, found that the genetic structure of GM seeds prevents uptake of magnesium which can cause serious health problems in animals and humans.

I hope that a solution to restoring soil health is found soon.

Sepp Hasslberger's curator insight, February 16, 2:51 AM

This is going to be the end of GMOs, rather than public protest about the dangers of eating GMO based foods. It shows us that it is money that makes the world go 'round. GMO was a bad bet by Monsanto and other agrochemical giants.

Arun Shrivastava's curator insight, February 16, 5:34 AM

The problem now is how to restore the farmlands to uncontaminated state. There is one possibility that my friends have tried here in Uttarakhand [a Himalayan State] and I am going to introduce this technique in Himachal Pradesh to our 24 partner villages [Up from 3 last year]. It is low cost and the results show up within a few months. It is essentially based on helping soil to boost the billions of life forms in the soil. It is my guess that if soils are kept free of fertilizers and pesticides and simultanoeusly helped with remineralization combined with organic methods of boosting soil organic matter, it helps regain fertility. It may not eliminate contamination but it may restore fertility. If our experiments succeed, we shall indtroduce this in cotton growing areas where farmers' suicides are concentrated.

Regulators Discover a Hidden Viral Gene in Commercial GMO Crops

Regulators Discover a Hidden Viral Gene in Commercial GMO Crops | Adverse Health Effects of Genetically Engineered Foods | Scoop.it
by Jonathan Latham and Allison Wilson How should a regulatory agency announce they have discovered something potentially very important about the safety of products they have been approving for over twenty years?
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Here's a sensible report on the dangers of agriculture biotechnology based food and fiber crops and it exposes the harmful effect of cauliflower mosaic gene or CaMV Gene. Some years ago [Latham and Wilson, 2008] there was a fear that CaMV could induce immune deficiency syndrome but a flurry of "scientific" reports denied that. They concluded that "because many viral genes function to disable their host in order to facilitate pathogen invasion and that "this is achieved by incapacitating specific anti-pathogen defenses. Incorporating such genes could clearly lead to undesirable and unexpected outcomes."

The recent study by Podevin and du Jardin [2012] and Seralini et al [2012] that "there are clear indications that this viral gene (called Gene VI) might not be safe for human consumption. It also may disturb the normal functioning of crops, including their natural pest resistance."

The European regulators should have accepted this findings and recalled all GM crops. They did not do this. Instead they have issued a vague warning. They could at least have ordered more rigorous lediul and long term testing which they have not done.

In India, despite a comprehensive assessment by Parliament's Standing Committee on Agriculture and recommendation to the Government to perform the required biosafety tests, Man Mohan Singh has not taken any step as suggested. Not only that this mad prime minister and his equally mad Agriculture Minister are actively promoting agriculture biotechnology.

Independent scientists uncover 'toxic' gene hiding in GM crops: Revelation throws new doubt over safety of GM foods | Adverse Health Effects of Genetically Engineered Foods | Scoop.it
A new study by the EU's official food watchdog, the European Food Safety Authority(EFSA), has revealed that the international approval process for GM crops failed to identify a virus gene.

Via Sepp Hasslberger, Arun Shrivastava
Sepp Hasslberger's curator insight, January 22, 5:52 AM

"The modification process involves inserting genes into the plants using a technique that allows them to piggyback on viruses that are commonly found in the soil and plants.

It has been assumed that virus genes are not present in the plant once it is grown in the field and reaches consumers, however it is now clear that this is not the case."

This is a macroscopic 'oversight' in the approval process of GM crops. And since there are no feeding trials to speak of, to make sure GM foods aren't toxic, it throws the whole of GM science into doubt.

The reply of the of the biotech industry rep that was asked to comment is telling: "...nearly three trillion meals containing GM ingredients have been eaten without a single substantiated case of ill-health."

That, of course, fails to mention how it has been established that there has not been a single case of ill health. Did anyone look? I bet not.

Arun Shrivastava's curator insight, January 22, 7:29 AM

It seems that the Indian Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister are sooo enamoured with GM seeds and foods that they are hell bent on turning India into a GM foods market. That will neither increase yield not nutrition nor ensure safety for environmental and human health.

Man Mohan has few years left, that twisted mouthed Sharad Pawar also has few years left. And yet,, instead of leaving a legacy of healthy India, they leave a trail of death and destruction and genocide behind when they move to their heavenly abode.

I want each one of you to look into this strategy of poisoning our food. Allocate just half hour every day to understand the process of genetic engineering seeds, contamination of natural seeds and plant world, transfer of alien proteins into human body and growth of lethal diseases like vital organ failure, cancers, obesity, and painful death.

It is your life and you have just one life. At least oppose this monstrosity of our political establishment and neo-conservative agenda of control over our food by a few multinational corporations in a manner that they kill us at will.

Also note that over the years the US and European MNCs [Monsanto, Bayer, Syngenta, Dow Chemicals, and four Indian seed producers who  have franchising/licensing agreement with these multinationals are systematically destroying natural seeds. NATURAL SEEDS ARE NOW HARD TO GET IN OPEN MARKET.

I have just one problem with this article. The writer says that Monsanto and Dow are in competition. Perhaps. But according my researches, the competition in global control over seeds in a matrix form. You can list rows of crops and columns of region. Not one is really competing directly. According to a new study, the ‘Cry’ toxins that Monsanto’s GMO crops have been genetically modified to produce are a lot more toxic to mammals than previously thought, primarily to the blood.
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Quote: "The scientists already knew that Bt toxin was very toxic and potentially deadly at levels above 270 milligrams per kilogram (basically ppm), so they instead tested levels ranging from 27mg/kg, 136mg/kg, and 270mg/kg for one to seven days (each of the Cry toxins were separated out and tested individually to maximize accuracy and total info). It was quite clear right off the bat that these Cry toxins were quite hemotoxic even at the lowest level of 27mg/kg administered only one time and one day as they clearly had damaged the blood, particularly in reference to red blood cells. The quantity and size of the erythrocytes (RBCs) were both significantly reduced, as was the overall levels of hemoglobin for which oxygen to attach to." Unquote.

Monsanto's Next Target: Democracy

Monsanto's Next Target: Democracy | Adverse Health Effects of Genetically Engineered Foods | Scoop.it
The battle for food sovereignty is a battle we cannot afford to lose.
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

To some extent we are ourselves to blame. Just as politicians have been targeting us for votes, same way corporations are for profiteering and the two are closely allied. Corporations just can't do things unless the people's representatives are colluding with them.

No matter how big these corporations think they are and powerful the politicians think they are, both can be finished off with the knowledge and information we have out in the open world. The enemy is within us and, far more importantly, our enemies are the so-called NGOs, the media, the religious bodies.........and the global civil society leaders.

The nexus is getting deeper and spreading its tentacles. It has spread across all aspects of our life. There is no option but to retaliate and "kill" these anti-people institutions and 'hang" them publicly. Do it by any means, it does not matter...every Constitution gives us all the RIGHT TO LIFE and RIGHT TO DEFEND OURSELVES.

Argentina's Bad Seeds and GMO Crops

Argentina's Bad Seeds and GMO Crops | Adverse Health Effects of Genetically Engineered Foods | Scoop.it
Argentina's population suffers from the harmful effects of massive herbicide spraying on its genetically engineered soya fields.
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Some years ago Dr. Don Huber had written to the US Government that Genetically Engineered plants have poor nutrient intake because their root system prevents nutrient uptake. Now studies are being carried out to determine the relative nutrition in genetically engineered foods. Just three comparative values as reported by Dr Mercola should terrify you.

Calcium: GMO corn = 14 ppm / Non-GMO corn = 6,130 ppm (437 times more)Magnesium: GMO corn = 2 ppm / Non-GMO corn = 113 ppm (56 times more)Manganese: GMO corn = 2 ppm / Non-GMO corn = 14 ppm (7 times more)

Note that your body needs calcium to keep your bones healthy. Calcium can't be absorbed unless sufficient quantity of magnesium is also available to human body. The availability of nutrition in our food plants depends upon the availability of nutrients in the soil. Glyphosate, the pesticide that is used in combination with Genetically Engineered seeds, destroys soil nutrient buffer and actually prevents plants from taking nutrients whatever is left.

Now, this is a hard evidence that multinational corporations are deliberately poisoning our foods and the natural resource base which ensures food security on the planet.

The long term studies on rats clearly [Seralini study] show how GE foods slowly destroy all vital organs and trigger cancers and vital organ failure.

This phenomenon was reported by Dr Irina Ermakova many years before the Seralini study came out but the Russian Academy of Sciences silenced Dr. Ermakova.

A decade of Bt hype

Arun Shrivastava's insight:

It is my pleasure to introduce Dr Prabhakaran Nair's scientific work to you all. Some of you may have heard of him but it seems that the world is forgetting what this one man achieved in advancing our understanding of soil science. Dr. Nair is one of the world's few honest scientists and he scientifically explained the soil nutrient buffer power concept. That is his contribution to the importance soil management for growing any crop. If China has achieved seven times increase in horticulture production since 1980 [against India's barely 100%], much of it is based on Dr Nair's science. While the Chinese Government has acknowledged his contribution, our own Indian Government, driven and pressured by US criminal seed and food corporations, has ensured that great scientists like Dr Nair are not given any credit.

Sepp Hasslberger's curator insight, January 23, 6:41 AM

This "open letter" article, signed by numerous scientists, examines the history and source of attacks on studies that inconveniently find risks, in this case risks of GMO corn. It looks into the role played by the media and the regulators' culpability in this, as well as the implications for science.

The conclusion:

"When those with a vested interest attempt to sow unreasonable doubt around inconvenient results, or when governments exploit political opportunities by picking and choosing from scientific evidence, they jeopardize public confidence in scientific methods and institutions, and also put their own citizenry at risk.

Safety testing, science-based regulation, and the scientific process itself, depend crucially on widespread trust in a body of scientists devoted to the public interest and professional integrity.

If instead, the starting point of a scientific product assessment is an approval process rigged in favour of the applicant, backed up by systematic suppression of independent scientists working in the public interest, then there can never be an honest, rational or scientific debate."
