Sue Braiden's insight:

Miriam Krause celebrated her 100th birthday by riding in a hot air balloon with her children and grandchildren, a lifelong wish finally granted. An adventure diva even as a child, Miriam once saw an acrobat on the trapeze at the circus, so her family built one for her in their backyard! Click the pic to grant the wish of another Adventure Diva like Miriam through the "Twilight Wish Foundation" then watch her story on CNN: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2012/10/04/iyw-twilight-wish.cnn

Pearl Malkin is more than halfway to her goal of raising $3,500 on Kickstarter to help launch Happy Canes, bright canes she decorates with artificial flowers.
Sue Braiden's insight:

Think you're too old to become an entrepreneur?  Don't say that to 89-year-old Pearl Malkin, aka "Grandma Pearl."

This week she reached her target of $3,500 in startup capital using the Kickstarter platform for her first-time business Happy Canes, a line of walking sticks she decorates with artificial flowers.

Pearl talks about launching the venture in this inspiring interview:

With 9 hours left in her campaign, she's far exceeded her goal:

It's never too late to have an adventure, no matter what that adventure may be!

Sister Mary Scullion and a Lesson in Choosing Your Heroes

Sister Mary Scullion and a Lesson in Choosing Your Heroes | Adventures with the Estrogen Army! | Scoop.it

Adventure Diva question of the day:

"Are you striving in life to imitate the people you admire, or the people you envy?"

This question puts things into a context I'd never considered, and boy is it ever a great gut check! The importance of this might not be evident at first glance. Reading adventure diva and "Eat, Pray, Love" author Elizabeth Gilbert's framing of it leads to a great forehead slap. (click here)

On reading her article on "Sister Mary Scullion", it becomes apparent why the context is so important.  (click here)

<snip> When Jon Bon Jovi (a loyal Project supporter) described Mary to the press as a nun "who swears and spits," the good sister merely replied, "I do not spit" — and then returned to her work of tirelessly saving her city, one desperate citizen at a time. </snip>

Read more about the ways this feisty nun has won the admiration of so many.

Shirley Jones plans to mark her 80th birthday by skydiving.

Shirley Jones plans to mark her 80th birthday by skydiving. | Adventures with the Estrogen Army! | Scoop.it
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Inspired by a former president, Shirley Jones can't wait to jump into her birthday plans.
Sue Braiden's insight:

"Partridge Family" matriarch, Shirley Jones, is no wuss!  She's marking her 80th birthday by making good on a life-long dream: she's going skydiving. The inspiration to try comes from former President George H.W. Bush's jumps on several birthdays, including when he turned 85 in 2009. "When I saw him do it I thought, 'Wow, if he can do this, I can,'" Jones said.  Now -that- is an adventure diva!

Artist Explores the Sea in Her Wheelchair

Artist Explores the Sea in Her Wheelchair | Adventures with the Estrogen Army! | Scoop.it
Sue Austin, an artist in the UK, can see the wonders of the ocean without leaving her wheelchair:To move through oceanic depths, the wheelchair uses a propeller and fins positioned at the back of Austin’s legs that allow her to steer via an acrylic...
Sue Braiden's insight:

Sue Austin is one seriously cool adventure diva. She's the U.K. multimedia, performance and installation artist behind "freewheeling", a "Disability Arts" hub where collaborations between artists use surreal juxtapositions and quirky re-presentations of disability equipment to explore new ways of seeing, being and knowing. She says her practice has operated as a vehicle to open up a thinking space around the materiality of the wheelchair, using it as a metaphor to raise questions about the value of diversity to society through raising the profile of ‘difference’. Oh yeah, and she also explores undersea in that wheelchair ;)

And if you thought crop circles were cool, just wait till you see what else she's doing with that wheelchair. Check the Archive section of her website:

British woman, 79, becomes martial-arts action hero

British woman, 79, becomes martial-arts action hero | Adventures with the Estrogen Army! | Scoop.it

I'm about to take the plunge after 10 years of imagining it. Rather than waiting to have the web launch-pad set up, I'm simply starting here, by sharing the inspiring women serendipity gifts my path with along the way.

And what better first share than a 79 year old woman who became a martial arts action hero?

Thanks to "Women and Girls Lead" for helping me discover incredible Kate.

<snip> Today in SHEROES ... "What impressed us is she could go from being really frail, and looking like she could break, to a totally empowered woman. She did it right in front of us and blew us away." </SNIP>
