Paradigm Shift: Thoughts on “Privilege” & Who Should Get to Sit at the Table

Paradigm Shift: Thoughts on “Privilege” & Who Should Get to Sit at the Table | Advancement of Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
To assume that one's voice and cultural contribution don’t count because one was born into "privilege" is as narrow and toxic as to deny o
Linda Alexander's insight:

I believe this sentiment to be true. While we all carry unique cultural baggage, and we should certainly be aware of the lense through which we view the world, the article points out that, "to deny a person’s merit or talent or voice on account of the circumstances with which he or she was blessed or cursed — without any say in the matter — is not only to victimize ourselves as individuals but to cheat ourselves, as a culture, of the essential gift of the human spirit."   We would have missed the gifts and talents of so many folks if we shut the door on people based on their socio-economic circumstances.

Report Finds ‘Deeper Learning’ Model Improves Outcomes for All Students | Advancement of Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it

The conversation about what kids need to know and to be able to do by the end of high school has gradually shifted over the past several years to emphasize not just rigorous content goals, but also less tangible skills, such as creative thinking, problem-solving and collaboration.

A progressive perspective on world events since 1952.
Linda Alexander's insight:

An interesting read on the person credited for pioneering the homeschooling movement. "Today Holt’s supporters know him best for deconstructing institutionalized education and criticizing its implementation to limit human thought and freedom. Less realized is that Holt did not view the education system as a sole actor in fostering such oppression."

Where Common Core is not controversial | The Thomas B. Fordham Institute | Advancement of Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
For over a year, I’ve been encouraging Common Core advocates to stop endlessly re-litigating the standards and instead to focus on getting implementation right. Taking my own advice last week, I traveled to Reno to see first-hand the work of the Core Task Project, the initiative driving implementation of the standards in Washoe County, Nevada.

The geek shall inherit the Earth: Do geeks make the best teachers? - Innovate My School

The geek shall inherit the Earth: Do geeks make the best teachers? - Innovate My School | Advancement of Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
Like SPECTRE in James Bond, those who identify as being geeks are now beginning to infiltrate the highest and most influential positions in society. Given that the role of an educator is about as influential as you can get, many teachers consider themselves as such. Teacher Rachel Jones, herself a huge advocate of geekiness, examines how this mindset and identity affects education.
Linda Alexander's insight:

A geek with a deep, abiding love of subject matter coupled with emotional intelligence is the perfect combination.  However, without the emotional intelligence component, students are left bewildered.

Gilbert school board calls for end to Common Core (When Politics Comes Before Education)

Gilbert school board calls for end to Common Core (When Politics Comes Before Education) | Advancement of Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
Allegations flew and tempers flared Tuesday as the Gilbert Public Schools governing board passed a resolution decrying Arizona's College and Career Ready Standards, commonly referred to as Common Core.
Linda Alexander's insight:

An example of school board members with not only a poor understanding of the Common Core (calling it a "corporate take-over") but politicizing education for their own aims.  Shameful!  The other example in the article is the board member who wants to make sure Planned Parenthood is not involved in their sex education.  How hard is that to figure out buddy? (not that it even matters if the curriculum is evidence-based and works).  Let's all work to put the children before individual political or popularity aspirations.  I do applaud most of the citizens who came to the meeting and spoke their minds!

Polls Capture Public's Sour View of Common Core

Polls Capture Public's Sour View of Common Core | Advancement of Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
A pair of wide-ranging polls by PDK/Gallup and Education Next gauge sentiment on the common standards, testing, school funding, and other hot-button issues.
Linda Alexander's insight:

While teachers are less enthusiastic, the public is largely ill informed. Firstly, the Common Core is NOT a federal initiative, (although certain politicians love to label it this way) and do not direct how teachers must instruct or present information.  The CC is really common learning standards that broadly define what children should be learning in each grade.

The following article comment deserves our attention:

"I'm especially sorry for the kids, who have to find a way to get ahead in a society that treats education as an afterthought instead of as a moral and economic imperative, because when they hit the job market they're going to be competing against people from nations that invest heavily in education."
