George Washington U Goes Test Optional in Admissions | InsideHigherEd

George Washington U Goes Test Optional in Admissions | InsideHigherEd | Advancement of Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
Linda Alexander's insight:

There are ways for top-ranked universities to be test-optional.  Especially, given a world where many students benefit via professional tutoring, and other students don't score as well due to test anxiety & learning differences.  Moreover, low income students are often at a disadvantage due to their less enriching life experiences.  Overall, there is not a strong correlation between test scores & college performance.  The SAT/ACT tests only serve to create an uneven playing field.  On the other hand, if someone excels at taking timed, multiple choice tests, it's okay to bring them on...

Debate Escalates Over Professor's Twitter Remarks (Scott Walker, tenure, free speech, anti-semitism) Wisconsin-Madison | InsideHigherEd | Advancement of Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
Linda Alexander's insight:

This is the most liberal university in a conservative state where Scott Walker attacked and won a battle against tenure.  Unfortunately, while professor Sara Goldrick-Rab has been a rising sociology star, her comments to prospective students crossed the "professionalism" line.  Your opinion? Twitter reactions are, nevertheless, particularly disturbing.

Everything you think you know about disciplining kids is wrong

Everything you think you know about disciplining kids is wrong | Advancement of Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
Negative consequences, timeouts, and punishment just make bad behavior worse. But a new approach really works.
Linda Alexander's insight:

Excellent piece in an environment where we increasingly witness overly punitive, old-fashion behavioral consequences of our youngest children--meltdowns caused by drill & kill environments that keep children at desks all day long without playtime or breaks.  Moreover, weak classroom management skills are supplemented, in some urban school environments, by all-encompassing disciplinary practices & procedures that are neither age-appropriate or fit to serve the long term interest of children.

(Kudos to Cleveland) Urban Districts Embrace Social-Emotional Learning

(Kudos to Cleveland) Urban Districts Embrace Social-Emotional Learning | Advancement of Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
Researchers are measuring the impacts of social-emotional learning programs in eight big-city school districts.
Linda Alexander's insight:

I am enormously proud of Cleveland (CMSD) schools and their focus on a key developmental program.  We live in an era where the socio-emotional health of children is too often not even on the radar screen.  Indeed we have many overly compliant, emotionless school cultures with adults singularly focused on the school's achievement on a few test scores. CASEL is a terrific organization, and our children deserve nothing less.

Out of the Books in Kindergarten, and Into the Sandbox

Out of the Books in Kindergarten, and Into the Sandbox | Advancement of Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
After focusing on raising test scores in math and reading, more school districts are embracing play as a bedrock of early education.
Linda Alexander's insight:

Disadvantaged students often enter classrooms almost two years behind their more affluent peers. However, eliminating playtime or any form of exercise during what is often an extended school day is, frankly, cruel.  There are ways to layer lessons and include meaningful play. We want a creative and innovative populace in the United States. Overall, this requires schools to provide developmentally appropriate room for children to DAILY exercise their minds and bodies.

Why Coeducation Matters - (Declining Higher Ed Interest in Single-Sex Ed & But Increase in K-12)

Why Coeducation Matters - (Declining Higher Ed Interest in Single-Sex Ed & But Increase in K-12) | Advancement of Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it

"The decline reflects the fact that women are doing quite well in higher education, and no longer feel the need for a protected space to develop their intellectual potential.  Women now earn 57 percent of the bachelor’s degrees, 63 percent of the master’s, and 53 percent of the doctoral degrees awarded each year in the U.S. "

Charter schools at (almost) a quarter-century: Looking back, looking ahead | The Thomas B. Fordham Institute

Linda Alexander's insight:

The hindsight bullet-points, such as the profiteering by some and lack of governance and oversight, hit all the right notes.  However, I don't agree with a few of the future recommendations, particularly the ability to select students.  If, as the report states, you want to start a charter school for musicians, students will certainly opt-out if they don't have an interest in learning an instrument.  Finally, the opting-out of state standards should not be an option if public funding remains part of the mix (whether one agrees w/ the standards or not).

What the Future Economy Means for How Kids Learn Today

What the Future Economy Means for How Kids Learn Today | Advancement of Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
Amidst an uncertain jobs future, how can schooling complement, not compete with, students' informal learning?
Linda Alexander's insight:

Policy makers are asking us to return to the drill & kill "basics," while the US labor market thrusts into the future. Futurists, actually for the last 10 years, have been predicting "the end of the job." This isn't as far-out as it once seemed given the tremendous growth in freelance work. Moreover, we are not paying attention to how some of the more tech-savvy children learn today via socially-connected platforms, although it's hard to believe that low-income families, a huge number in the United States, will have the necessary bandwidth to create their own learning networks (as this article states).  From where I stand, there could well be two separate educational systems in this country.  First, a much more innovative, peer-to-peer, project based approached for children from higher income families, and the continuation of the same old educational practices for most everyone else. And that would be really sad.
