A group representing New York City private schools said it would no longer recommend using the test because of concerns that test-preparation courses rendered it meaningless.
The shift away from using the ERB as the sole predictor of independent and private school admission is long overdue. However, and tossing in this small caveat, when the ERB is used as one of several admission-related instruments, with its weight being less important (and sometimes suspect because it can be inflated), then one could successfully argue it makes sense to have some academic assessment or benchmark data on the children arriving at your door before they get there. Nevertheless, I have been wondering for a VERY long time how the ERB could possibly measure creativity, collaboration & other notable 21st Century skills that independent schools highlight. Yes, I realize some independent schools "appreciate" how higher ERB scores predict future National Merit Scholars and, later on, higher scores on the standardized test instruments the top colleges' use for entry. In this case, ERB scores help hand the schools some marketing and bragging rights on down the road...blah, blah, blah. However, exactly like the SAT/ACT and pretty much all standardized tests, the system is being gamed by parents who have the financial muscle and the end results are neither fair or equitable. From a societial view, this certainly doesn't seem like fair play either.
Independent schools in New York City have come to realize just that, "test-preparation programs and coaching had rendered its results meaningless, it would no longer recommend that its members use the test."
All I can say to the New York decision is AMEN....now go ahead and proceed to take a diverse range of wonderful children and lift them all equally and equitably to their own true potentials.
