Getting FLUENT with the 5 FLUENCIES…

Getting FLUENT with the 5 FLUENCIES… | Adult Literacy | Scoop.it

Although this covers aspects of what I the writer considers Global Digital Citizenship (which I would consider the digital equivalent of Cultural Literacy,) it is interesting to see this conceptual list of so many new types of literacies/fluencies.  Once again, we must consider the source.  It's a blog, but I do read this one and consider it credible. Of interest because as new literacies seem to emerge daily, I think it is reasonable to consider his various ideas and think about if they fit into silos we have already established, if they are something new we might consider, or if they are not worthy of consideration.  I liked "collaboration literacy" but not sure if I would put it in the digital literacy silo.

Graphicacy: Infographics As Literacy | Innovation Design In Education - ASIDE

Graphicacy: Infographics As Literacy | Innovation Design In Education - ASIDE | Adult Literacy | Scoop.it

This is interesting.  Innovative design crosses over all aspects of education. The American Society for Innovation Design in Education, or ASIDE, seeks to infuse curriculum with new approaches to teaching and thinking.  Everywhere we look these days, we see infographics.  Infographics are the realization of information in a visual format.  They claim it is a literacy on par with textual, oral, and numerical skills. Visualization often takes a backseat in traditional classrooms, because understanding pictures is thought to be a natural consequence of basic vision. The conventional wisdom says that if people can see, then naturally they can comprehend what they see.  Personally I do agree that visualization of a concept does a fantastic job of emphasizing facts in a way that turns them into knowledge.   Especially when the information involves facts and figures, an infographic displays the facts in a way that usually leaves me with an AHA moment.

Universities must rethink their approach to student digital literacy

Universities must rethink their approach to student digital literacy | Adult Literacy | Scoop.it

The emphasis should be on building digital communication skills so that students can share and develop their ideas and aspirations online, says the author.  The article focuses on the opinion that the digital domain is a space for conversations based on shared values.  I am not sure I agree with the shared values part - although a definition of values might be in order.  I do not think that a common interest = a common value, but common interests alone are often the basis of discussion.  Learning happens when someone has a common interest but with different values, even though the learning does not necessarily mean agreement.

Is Personalized Learning another Education Fad or Can it Really Happen in Our ... - Forbes

Is Personalized Learning another Education Fad or Can it Really Happen in Our ... - Forbes | Adult Literacy | Scoop.it

Is Personalized Learning another Education Fad or Can it Really Happen? This is from Forbes Magazine.  Per the article, "along the journey we have added new terms to our lexicon like blended learning, virtual learning, online learning, anywhere/everywhere learning, etc." to compensate for the fact that traditional institutions might soon be obsolete.  Again we question - what literacies are needed going forward?  In fact, what literacies do we need NOW if we are going to teach younger people, and what do we need ourselves to remain relevant.  It seems to be a moving target.

Can educators in the 21st Century be content experts, but media illiterate and still be relevant?

Great question - can you be a good content matter expert, but not stay up to date (one of my definitions of any of the sub-literacies) and relevant?  I don't believe so, but it depends on the content.  This video provides one point of view.

The adult skills budget offers opportunities and threats to the Further Education sector - FE News

The adult skills budget offers opportunities and threats to the Further Education sector - FE News | Adult Literacy | Scoop.it

This is an article from a UK paper that prompted some concerns about Adult Education when it proclaimed "Adult Learner Responsive funding has been combined with Employer Responsive funding to form a single pot, which will be known as the Adult Skills Budget (ASB), bringing together college-based courses and workplace learning. The hope is that this will simplify funding streams moving forward, giving training providers more flexibility to deal with the overall cuts in further education funding."  Not only educational institutions should be concerned, as fundamental literacy (ABE) is not addressed at all.

Digital Literacy is the Bedrock for Lifelong Learning | Edutopia

Digital Literacy is the Bedrock for Lifelong Learning | Edutopia | Adult Literacy | Scoop.it

This site talks, once again, about the original digital divide and the author makes a good point.  Although we say the divide has narrowed with cell phones and other internet access tools and efforts, a traditional cell phone does not allow a user to fully participate in the digital experience.  This is an article where her words do the topic much more justice than I could, so it is worth clicking through to read.

Digital Literacies for Writing in Social Media | DMLcentral | Adult Literacy | Scoop.it

The following is a shortened version of a talk given at the "Engaging the Public" symposium held at Washington & Jefferson College on Oct. 1. According to Cathy Davidson's "Now You See It," 65 percent of students entering school today will have careers in fields that haven't been invented yet.  I would guess that a full 100% of these students, at some point in their lives, will be required to use writing technologies that haven't been invented yet.

MediaShift . Learning in a Digital Age: Teaching a Different Kind of Literacy | PBS | Adult Literacy | Scoop.it

A common theme in education today is definition of what literacies a student needs today to prepare them for jobs that don't yet exist.  Perhaps this is one of the few benefits that adult learners have today - if they can identify and learn a literacy or skill that is needed now, it can be immediately applied.  This article is one of so many about how difficult educating our young people is right now, since over 50% of the jobs they will have available don't exist right now.

Native or immigrant – Exploring foreign territory in online learning

Native or immigrant – Exploring foreign territory in online learning | Adult Literacy | Scoop.it

This is an interesting article written by a man who took a courses online which opened his eyes to how, if one is not digitally literate, it keeps the technology from being transparent (my word) and gets in the way of the communication and content.  Another reason why people need to be technologically/digitally literate today - as workplace communication involves more and more of these skills and collaboration tools, the facilitating tool will act as a barrier and performance will suffer.
