With servant leadership, a leader's primary role is to serve employees. Everyone from Lao-Tzu to Max De Pree thinks this a wonderful model. Why, then, is this style so rare among CEOs?

I have been reading Robert Greenleaf's original essay regarding "Servant as Leader" written in 1970. I believe fully in the philosophy and desire to model my own leadership style based on the philosophy of servant leadership. I have also, through experience come to accept that not all employees respond to servant leadership. Some employees need a traditional command and control leader. Servant leadership is prevalent and effective, but the leader must be flexible, continuously take the temperature of their team and attract the right team members who will respond to servant leadership in a productive manner.

This article focuses on the challenge of measuring learning.  Throughout the industrial age, businesses have became very good at measuring production, sales, assests and the value of a business.  The unwritten motto of industrial aged leaders is "it isn't worth focusing on if you can't measure it".  However, in the knowledge worker age the greatest assest is knowlowdge, skills and ability.  Organizaitions are living and breathing.  How do you measure the employees current state of knowledge and knowledge gained and thus the value of an organization?  It can be done, but it may not be captured and presented in hard data.  A return on expectation may be a better form of measurement.  Employees learn and grow in their knowledge, skills and ability to be a contributing member of an organization.  These can be measured or observed in their behavior, attitutdes, confidence level and ability to handle increasing responsibility.  These observable traits are not easy to quantify, but they are worth focusing on and provide leaders with an assessment of the value of their organization.

It was early on in my career in sales that I fell in love with training and education. The fact that I could learn a system and process and then apply it to my practice was exciting. It was during those early years that I experienced the thrill of being an adult learner. I notice that too often training is a one time event and that the participants are not changed because the content was not relevant or reinforced in practice.

I love the concept of self-directed work teams and creating an adaptive collaborative team environment.  My experience has been that not every organization wants this type of environment.  This is not surprising as many organizations with highly structured systems are not ready to give up control.  What has been shocking is that not every employee wants to work in an adaptive collaborative environment.  There are some people who crave the organization and structure of a bureaucracy.  They resist the call to be innovative and the demands that an adaptive organization places on all employees at every level.

I love the evolution of Buzz words and will be watching to see if "deep smarts" takes a foot hold in the vocabulary of learning professionals.  Regardless, this is a great article reminding organizational leaders of the importance of systematically capturing and transferring information from experienced employees.  Although this article focuses on the impending retirement of baby boomers, the reality is that we live in a transient work environment, where employees are constantly coming and going.  Many organizational leaders fear the loss of productivity when experienced workers leave, but the transient workforce is a reality and one that needs to be embraced.  Knowledge transfer should focus on capturing and sharing information, as well forgetting some ways of doing things.  An organization needs to embrace ideas and new ways of doing things that come with each new employee, while maintaining productivity.

Employers: 'Skills gap' is not our problem to fix

New data suggest that although many companies complain about the so-called skills gap, only a minority of companies are taking steps to fix it.
Dr. Steven F. Simmons's insight:

Not every company believes it's their responsibility to train and develop their employees. The process is costly and the modern professional is mobile. Employers ask themselves "why invest into an employee, who is just going to leave us". However, the modern professional or 21st Century Knowledge Worker is looking to offer their services to a company and in return they want to grow their professional skills through experience and education.  Company leaders should look at training and professional development, not as an expense, but as a tool to recruit and retain the best and brightest workers.  Career minded employees began to leave an organization when they feel they are no longer developing their skills through new experiences or training opportunities.

Companies shouldn't assume that "leadership" only applies to their chief officers. In fact, businesses must find the right people to fill four distinct types of leadership roles.

This article makes a good point that leadership is not just at the top of the organization.  Instead there are various leadership roles throughout an organization.  I would add one more role and that is "Personal Leadership".  Everyone is a leader and must take ownership of their career and their performance within an organization.  This includes developing a strategic vision for your life and career as well as managing and monitoring your performance in the workplace.
