Suzy Allman's insight:

FRECKLES - SOUTH ORANGE, NJ: For three years, Freckles has lived at Jersey Animal Coalition Fans, and the stress of kennel living is starting to show.

When she first came to the shelter, they say, Freckles was was happy, carefree, and loved to play with other dogs. But she's become very nervous and startles easily. It's understandable, and if you've ever had a dog who loves to be loved, who loves the outdoors and exercise, you wonder why it doesn't happen to all of them, and sooner.

Freckles must be THE favorite dog at the shelter, and I can only imagine the tears when she leaves, when they finally see her jump in a car -- HER car -- and wave goodbye, snout in the air, first breath of freedom on an early spring day.

This absolutely gorgeous dog -- she has faint freckles across her fawn-colored body -- needs to go home. Jersey Animal Coalition has started a fund to pay for whatever training she needs to help her see a positive future, and to go back to being the playful puppy she came in as.

See JAC's Facebook page for more info.

When Neglect Rises to Animal Cruelty: Lili's Story, from Abandoned Angels

When Neglect Rises to Animal Cruelty: Lili's Story, from Abandoned Angels | CharlieDogs Loves a Rescue Pet! | Scoop.it
Lili was adopted out from NY ACC more than a decade ago. When she found herself homeless again, her little body showed a decade of neglect.
Suzy Allman's insight:

How is it that some dogs are loved, taken care of, lavished with attention, and others suffer this kind of fate?  What on earth could this little dog have done to deserve this?  Thank God for rescues like Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue.  They stepped up for this girl, and found her a foster home and the love she deserved.

The Crate Conundrum: A Safe Place for Your Pooch

The Crate Conundrum: A Safe Place for Your Pooch | CharlieDogs Loves a Rescue Pet! | Scoop.it
Get ideas for a comfy den for your dog that works well with your space too
Suzy Allman's insight:

Never mind the clever ideas for how to disguise a dog's crate in your house -- read the comments under this article for a lively and sometimes heated discussion about whether you should put your dog in a crate when you're away, or not.

(Personally, I'm all for providing our two dogs with their own dens, but I swore since the moment I sprung them from the shelter, they would never see the world through closed bars again.)

Why Are Some Dog Breeds More Prone to Obesity?

Why Are Some Dog Breeds More Prone to Obesity? | CharlieDogs Loves a Rescue Pet! | Scoop.it
Obesity is the number one nutritional disease affecting dogs today, and it can lead to much more serious medical issues. (Why are some dogs more prone to obesity?

Via Rudy Montigny
Suzy Allman's insight:

I've asked this same question myself.  I have two shepherd-mutt mixes.  One is clearly of the livestock-guarddog variety, the other is more German Shepherd looking.  Charlie -- the guard dog -- eats the same amount as Wolf, hikes the same distance every day, but still gains weight.  I've wondered: is this because he's been bred, somewhere in that muttly pedigree -- to stay put out in the cold while the livestock lie down or graze?

Story Behind The Shot: Richard Phibbs Snaps Pet Portraits For Humane Society Of New York. | CharlieDogs Loves a Rescue Pet! | Scoop.it
[Editor's Note: This story is part of our Story Behind The Shot series. Got a great shot? Got a great story? Join The Dodo tell us about it.]Richard Phibbs many photo shoots with Humane Society of New York adoption animals have created lovely portraits. These photos have been seen all over the world...
Suzy Allman's insight:

Great photos.  But where are the pitbulls?  The photographer nails the eye contact and the personality of these dogs perfectly every time, in a way that's almost like fashion photography.  But I found myself wondering: out of the 20 portraits posted in this article, not one was of a pitbull type.  If you've ever been into New York Animal Care and Control, you'd know that, overwhelmingly, most of the stray and abandoned dogs in their shelters (and in the shelters across America) are pitbulls.  Why not a single pitbull here?

So I checked the New York Humane Society shelter website (for whom these were shot), and indeed, there is not a single pitbull with them -  at least, not among the pictures posted on their website and PetFinder page.

So I wonder why this is.  I wonder if some shelters and organizations discourage the intake of pit bulls, feeling like they're harder to place because of their numbers.  It cannot be coincidence that the most abused and abandoned dogs in New York City are not portrayed here.

Dogs, Cats Being Removed From Crumbling Shelter | CharlieDogs Loves a Rescue Pet! | Scoop.it
An animal shelter for dogs, cats and rabbits has been ordered to evacuate after cracks were discovered in the building, and its workers are scrambling to find homes for the furry pets.
Suzy Allman's insight:

This is one of the most reputable shelters in the country.  It's where we rescued Wolf and Charlie, years ago, when it was in the hands of another group, and failing their animals badly.  Not long after, when taken over by Pets Alive, it was a thriving institution of the community.  Please help: share, post, donate, or go down and pitch in.  Open your wallet and send them a donation, or just bring one of their beautiful animals home.

Suzy Allman's insight:

What I love about this story: it's so moving, and so deeply felt, that you think you're reading an extraordinary account of an extraordinary dog.  I think the owner himself would say Pie wasn't particularly special to anyone but his family.  And yet, this is exactly what you get with an older dog adoption: the chance to write the end of his story, and to make it exceptional.  Well done to Mark Fowler, and to Bob, who sketched Pie.
