For the first time, the Army is deploying special scientists and self-contained, mobile laboratories to the warzone capable of designing and producing problem-solving inventions for soldiers operating in remote outposts in Afghanistan.

 

Of course, it is equiped with 3D printing CNN machines, and engineers.

The US Army's Rapid Equipping Force (REF) deployed its second mobile expeditionary lab - containing some novel technologies - into theatre on 7 January 2013.

 

It seems to be worth trying again, or maybe it is proving successful.

CUMC scientists have created a 3D-printed implant that stimulates stem cells to regenerate the meniscus, cartilage that cushions and protects the knee.

The scaffold is manufactured in polycaprolactone, and infused with two recombinant human proteins: connective growth factor (CTGF) and transforming growth factor β3 (TGFβ3). Dr. Mao’s team found that sequential delivery of these two proteins attracts existing stem cells from the body and induces them to form meniscal tissue.For a meniscus to properly form, however, the proteins must be released in specific areas of the scaffold in a specific order. This is accomplished by encapsulating the proteins in two types of slow-dissolving polymeric microspheres, first releasing CTGF (to stimulate production of the outer meniscus) and then TGFβ3 (to stimulate production of the inner meniscus). Finally, the protein-infused scaffold is inserted into the knee. In sheep, the meniscus regenerates in about four to six weeks. Eventually, the scaffold dissolves and is eliminated by the body.

Aerojet Rocketdyne Successfully Tests Thrust Chamber Assembly Using Copper Alloy Additive Manufacturing Technology | Aerojet Rocketdyne

NASA and Aerojet Rocketdyne successfully completed a series of hot-fire tests on an advanced rocket engine Thrust Chamber Assembly (TCA) using copper alloy additive manufacturing technology. This testing, conducted for the first time in the industry, was done with cooperation between Aerojet Rocketdyne, NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate Game-Changing Development Program and NASA's Glenn Research Center under a Space Act Agreement.

Last Aug 18, 2014 Aerojet Rocketdyne, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company, announced it had recently been awarded a contract by Wright-Patterson Air Force Base through the Defense Production Act Title III Office for large-scale additive manufacturing development and demonstration. The contract will secure multiple large selective laser melting machines to develop liquid rocket engine applications for national security space launch services. Aerojet Rocketdyne and its subcontractors will design and develop larger scale parts to be converted from conventional manufacturing to additive manufacturing.

Now, they present results from a lot of hot fire tests on copper parts. Does it indicate UK-based 3T-RPD are behind this?

They also indicate that they have been working with 10 inch machines and the new system is bigger, so they are probably talking about the new ESO M-400 (http://www.eos.info/systems_solutions/metal/systems_equipment/eos_m_400)

Ricoh Launches 3D Printing Related Business

Tokyo, September 8, 2014. Ricoh Company, Ltd. announced the launch of an additive manufacturing business (AM Business) centered on 3D printers. Through this new business, Ricoh will sell 3D printers and its associated output service directly to manufacturing customers, as well as provide consulting services to these customers using first-hand knowledge and experience.

There are a number of 3D printing methods, including inkjet, material extrusion, and laser sintering. Ricoh has its own technologies related to inkjet, materials, and powders, which are necessary elements to produce these outputs. In particular, Ricoh directly sells inkjet heads utilizing laminated piezoelectric technology to industrial customers worldwide, which are widely used for paper printing and a variety of media, including signage, graphics, and three-dimensional fabrication. Ricoh will continue its research and development, leveraging its experience and technologies, while also consider in-house production and sales of 3D printers.

Last year, Arcam’s shares soared a 530% thanks to the hype in 3D printing trending topic (http://3dprinting-stocks.com/swedens-arcam-share-price-has-soared-530-in-the-past-year/). DiSanto Technology, founded in 1967 had bought 2 Arcam machines, and last year generated $12 million in revenue. Arcam acquired DiSanto Technology in a $15.8 million cash deal.

I really love this one: old mechanical things, no electronics, no sensors, just pure old mechanical. Maybe I would just a steampunk style and a steam generator, a bit of copper here and there, just to make it industrial.
