Tom Sturridge Locks A Lead In Searchlight’s ‘Far From The Madding Crowd’

Tom Sturridge Locks A Lead In Searchlight’s ‘Far From The Madding Crowd’ | Additionals | Scoop.it

Tom Sturridge has been set alongside Matthias Schoenaerts and Carey Mulligan in Far From The Madding Crowd, the Fox Searchlight adaptation of the Thomas Hardy novel that will be directed by Thomas Vinterberg in the helmer’s English language debut. Based on the classic novel, the film concerns a young woman and the consequences of relationships she has with three separate men at the same time.

Sturridge is coming off a Tony-nominated performance in Orphans opposite Alec Baldwin in his Broadway debut, and he was most recently seen onscreen in the Walter Salles-directed adaptation of On The Road.

Tom Sturridge is represented by CAA and Curtis Brown in the UK.

ADDED:

Tom Sturridge...will play Sergeant Troy, the handsome but heartless cavalryman in the new film version of Thomas Hardy’s Far From The Madding Crowd.

Sturridge... was cast after doing extensive auditions with director Thomas Vinterberg and screen tests with Carey Mulligan, who plays the tale’s complex heroine Bathsheba Everdene.

Bathsheba manages three suitors at the same time. Troy is the vilest of them all — but also the most virile. He ruthlessly abandons servant girl Fanny Robin ... to chase after Bathsheba. Hardy describes him as the ‘bright scarlet spot’ because he’s rarely without his red army tunic with its gleaming brass buttons.

Troy’s a bounder and a show-off but he engages in one of the most sensual (and dangerous) seduction passages in literature by slicing and thrashing his broadsword round Bathsheba while she stands, still as a statue.

Tom Sturridge and Sienna Miller confirmed as the new faces of Burberry

Tom Sturridge and Sienna Miller confirmed as the new faces of Burberry | Additionals | Scoop.it

Perhaps the worst kept secret in fashion is finally out of the bag: Sienna Miller and her actor fiancé Tom Sturridge are the new faces of Burberry.

Rumours first circulated back in late April when the British couple were both dressed in Burberry at the opening night of Sturridge's Broadway play Orphans (Miller in a classic belted trench teamed with a heart-print handbag, Sturridge in a natty tailored ensemble), then gathered momentum at the Met Ball where it was Burberry head-to-toe for the loved-up pair once again.

So, continuing Burberry's 'couples concept' (past pairings include Eddie Redmayne and Cara Delevingne, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Sam Riley), the flirty campaign sees the new parents (Miller gave birth to their first child, daughter Marlowe 11 months ago) sharing a series of romantic kisses for Mario Testino's lens.

MTV: Kristen Stewart about James Gandolfini (+VIDEO)

MTV: Kristen Stewart about James Gandolfini (+VIDEO) | Additionals | Scoop.it
In a 2010 interview with MTV News, Stewart talks about the pleasure of working with co-star Gandolfini, who died on Wednesday (19.06.2013).

Since the announcement Wednesday afternoon of "Sopranos" star James Gandolfini's passing, the entertainment industry has started reflecting on his influence on acting throughout his vast and eclectic career.

Gandolfini won three Emmys for his role as Tony Soprano on the acclaimed HBO series, which ran for six seasons, from 1999 to 2007. But his influence reached far beyond the mob, through his more recent roles in "Zero Dark Thirty," "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Welcome to the Rileys."

While she had yet to make a public statement on his death at press time, Gandolfini's "Welcome to the Rileys" co-star Kristen Stewart spoke to MTV News in 2010 about working with an actor of his caliber.

Gandolfini was well-known for playing characters that are intimidating, which suggests he was himself an imposing presence on set. But Stewart insisted that sharing the screen with him offered her much more reassurance than insecurity.

"It's actually really oddly comforting," she told MTV News' Josh Horowitz. "Like, if you're working with someone who's an unknown, it's always like, 'Oh, I hope they're [OK].' But going into a movie with James and Melissa [Leo], the nerves come from 'I hope I'm going to be OK' rather than 'I hope they're not going to let me down'."

And he didn't seem to let her down one bit. In the film, Stewart plays an underage stripper who allows Gandolfini's character, a grieving father, to stay with her, only to find herself becoming part of an unconventional family after his estranged wife shows up as well. Stewart said that his contributions were essential to her being able to play the role as effectively as possible.

"You can't do it alone," she observed. "So yeah, it was intimidating, but at the same time, like it always is with actors like that, it really pushes you hard."

BBC America: What ‘Orphans’ Tony Nominee Tom Sturridge Misses From London | Additionals | Scoop.it

British actor Tom Sturridge, a Tony nominee for his performance in the Broadway play Orphans, misses the light. “There is something about the light in London which is different to anywhere in the world. I could look at London’s sky with no context and know that it was London, I miss that.”

Sturridge ... was elated when he found out he’d received a Tony nomination: “I was dumbfounded. I mean, it really wasn’t on my radar that it would be a possibility. I had like twelve emails, and I’m someone who gets one email a week, so I was just so excited that when I realized that they were about being nominated for a Tony.”

Forbes: Why Kristen Stewart Best Represents New Movie Stardom

Forbes: Why Kristen Stewart Best Represents New Movie Stardom | Additionals | Scoop.it

[Now commercial success of movie] is a matter of star *and* concept, rather than just one or the other.  Unless you have a property with an already establish rabid fan base (think Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone), you need someone on the poster whom moviegoers are going to want to see. And unless you have one of the few movie stars who can open everything (Will Smith and Denzel Washinton), you need a concept that piques interest.  That is what movie stardom is in 2013.

... one of the big differences between Jack the Giant Slayer and Oz: The Great and Powerful was that the latter Disney concoction had actual movie stars.  James Franco, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis, and Rachel Weisz aren’t openers by themselves, but they represent added value to a big-budget fantasy picture like this.  They get adults interested in the film, give it a degree of respectability, and offer the ability to promote a given film across a variety of media outlets (magazine covers, talk show interviews, etc.).

When you’re dealing with mega-budget would-be tent poles, star power is more important than ever.  When you’re dealing with mega-budgets, having something resembling star-power can be the difference between John Carter and Alice In Wonderland.  ... As of this tenuous moment, Kristen Stewart arguably represents the best-case scenario for actresses at this moment.

Unlike her various peers who are also well known and fill up various tabloid pages and magazine interviews, many of whom qualify as ‘added value’ in the right project, she’s actually opened a tent pole.  You make a Snow White and the Huntsman HUN -1.63% with most actresses and you’ll be thrilled with a $30 million debut, even with the ‘added value’ of Chris Hemsworth, the ‘prestige’ of Charlize Theron, and a strong trailer cut to the Inception trailer music.  You make a Snow White and the Huntsman with Stewart and you get a $56 million opening weekend. That’s unquestioned drawing power for the right project, not just ‘added value’.  Sure her popularity is mostly based around her starring role in The Twilight Saga, but it is a large and *very* committed fan base that has now proven that they’ll turn out for a mainstream star vehicle on the rare occasion she makes one. Kristen Stewart may not turn On the Road or Adventureland into a blockbuster, but she has a huge fan base that flocked to see her in a medieval action fantasy that happened to be called Snow White. Again, it’s a matter of star and concept.  Yes, it’s indeed unfair in that very few actresses will get the chance to headline their own franchise in this boy-centric era, no The Hunger Games was not sold on the “star power” of Winter’s Bone star Jennifer Lawrence, but Kristen Stewart got the opportunity and her fans supported her en masse.

She succeeded where the likes of Charlize Theron (Aeon Flux), Halle Berry (Catwoman), and Jennifer Garner (Electra) did not.  None of the above examples were good movies (and for that matter neither was Snow White and the Huntsman), but Stewart delivered her Twi-Hards over the opening weekend of her big movie for blockbuster numbers.

... being a movie star in 2013 means more than just having your face on the poster, but rather having your face on the poster of a movie that people would probably want to see anyway.  And while Stewart probably doesn’t care about such things (had she not starred in the highly divisive Twilight franchise, she’d probably be mostly well-regarded as an indie actress), she has the kind of, um… impressive fan base that turned Snow White and the Hunstman into a genuine blockbuster.

That’s the kind of pure star power that’s all-too-rare in 2013 for any actor.  It may be a one-shot deal, but for now that makes Kristen Stewart as much of a pure movie star as anyone else in her generation.

James Franco Could Replace Jude Law In Werner Herzog’s ‘Queen of the Desert’

James Franco Could Replace Jude Law In Werner Herzog’s ‘Queen of the Desert’ | Additionals | Scoop.it

Werner Herzog’s Queen Of The Desert has James Franco circling the role that Jude Law was going to play.

As known Herzog lined up Naomi Watts and Robert Pattinson to star in the story of Gertrude Bell’s life as a traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the 20th Century. Law had signed on to the film, but exited awhile ago to do the play Henry V, and the project ground to a halt. Getting a commitment from Franco would put the picture back on track. Stay tuned.

Variety: Kristen Stewart Sets Up Next Two Projects | Additionals | Scoop.it

Kristen Stewart has lined up her next two projects, committing to the political pic “Camp X-Ray” and the indie “Sils Maria.”

“Camp X-Ray” is being written and helmed by Peter Sattler and produced by Gina Kwon and Sophia Lin. Deadline Hollywood broke the news.

Story follows a girl who joins the military to escape her small town, only to come to realize that her tour of duty isn’t what she expected when she is sent to Guantanamo.

In “Sils Maria,” which IFC Films will release, Stewart joins Juliette Binoche and Chloe Moretz in a pic based on the idea of a middle aged person looking at how she has spent her life and what she has accomplished. Binoche plays an actress obsessed with her previous choices, and Stewart will play her assistant in a role which was previously filled by Mia Wasikowska, who has fallen out. Tom Sturridge: "To be an English person in my 20s, doing a Broadway show—it’s one of the mountains I wanted to climb"

Tom Sturridge: "To be an English person in my 20s, doing a Broadway show—it’s one of the mountains I wanted to climb" | Additionals | Scoop.it

Age and Hometown: 27; London

Current Role: A Broadway debut as Phillip, the housebound brother who forms a bond with a mysterious father figure (Alec Baldwin) in Orphans.

In the Blood: The son and the grandson of celebrated British actors, Sturridge made his professional debut at 11 in a Gulliver’s Travels miniseries directed by his father, Charles, and co-starring his mother, Phoebe Nicholls. But, he insists, “I didn’t have any idea what I wanted to be when I grew up.” At 17, he began to embrace the family business after István Szabó cast him as Annette Bening’s son in Being Julia, filmed during a “glorious” summer in Budapest. The director “was an extraordinary teacher who wanted to make a piece of art,” Sturridge recalls. “After spending time with him, I decided that it wouldn’t be a ridiculous notion to be an actor.”

Audition Angst: You might assume that Sturridge was cast in Orphans on the strength of his award-winning London stage work and film resume (On the Road, Pirate Radio). Wrong: He had to audition, American style. “In England, theater auditions are gentler experiences,” he says wryly. “You sit down with the director and talk about the play. Here, there were 100 [actors] pumping themselves up and shouting the lines. I don't function well in that situation. Then I went into a room the size of a gymnasium, with six people behind a table, and one of them said, ‘Read.’” The angst was worth it. “To be an English person in my 20s, doing a Broadway show—it’s one of the mountains I wanted to climb.”

Dream Role: Sturridge has won raves for his athletic, vulnerable and very American performance as sheltered brother Phillip in Orphans. “I was incredibly moved by the play when I read it,” he says, adding that his stage partnership with Alec Baldwin and Ben Foster has been “invigorating and exciting.
