Caleigh Pryor's curator insight, March 23, 2016 7:49 PM
  • By defining addiction as being a battle with chronic relapsing, it should be replaced with something that is more accurate and empowering to those who do suffer from it.
  • The stigma there is towards addiction has gotten worse throughout the years but, more steps are being taken to end that stigma and help shed some light on what addiction and being a surviver of addiction actually means.'
  • Many of the stigmas there are towards mental illness comes from years and years and years ago and are based on religion.
  • Bias: There is a strong bias towards how addiction should be seen as an actual illness and not just something that people chose to par take in.
  • Purpose: The purpose of this article was to inform and persuade. It was to inform people of what addiction is and how it actually is a mental illness and to persuade them into considering and realizing how it is something that they cannot control.
  • I totally agree with this article and I feel as if it hits very close to home for me. I come from a whole family of addicts and I myself know what it is like to be an addict. I have a very addictive personality and I have to more careful than most because I have a greater chance at getting addicted to it. There really is a strong, disgusting stigma that is attached to addiction and a lot of people just don't care enough to want to learn about it. Even though it is an epidemic and it impacts someone everywhere, no matter what.

AA reduces relapse risk, but can it also help reduce depression? | Recovery Research Institute

AA reduces relapse risk, but can it also help reduce depression? | Recovery Research Institute | Addiction, Treatment & Recovery | Scoop.it

Caleigh Pryor's curator insight, March 23, 2016 8:51 PM
  • Addicts who do chose to participate in 12 step programs like AA, are more likely to stay clean and also experience less depression while on the road of sobriety.
  • 50% of individuals who are considered to be addicts, also suffer from depression.
  • Addicts who kept with the 12 step program and reguarly attended meetings after two years were significantly less depressed than those who did not.
  • Bias: There is no bias in this because it is a study done to prove whether or not the posed question was found to be true.
  • I was honestly surprised when I saw how low the number was for many addicts were actually clinically depressed. Personally, I thought it would be a lot higher than that. I was also surprised to learn that actually particapting in the 12 steps and regularly going to meetings was proven to truly be beneficial. Obviously, it worked but I had thought that being around addict, it would make temption and relapse more likely.
