Neurotransmitters–A Primer - Dana Foundation

Neurotransmitters–A Primer - Dana Foundation | Addiction Recovery | Scoop.it

"The brain contains billions and billions of neurons. These cells communicate with one another by releasing small endogenous chemical messengers, called neurotransmitters, into the synapse, where they are then taken up by specific receptors on neighboring cells. There are many types of neurotransmitters in the brain—what they have in common is that they are produced inside a neuron, released into the synapse, and then cause an excitatory or inhibitory effect on receptor cells, helping to propagate or downgrade action potentials."

Nutrition Therapy For Addiction

Nutrition Therapy For Addiction | Addiction Recovery | Scoop.it

A treatment program that focuses on nutrition can be an important benefit to someone in recovery for drug abuse or alcoholism. When incorporated correctly, nutrition therapy can help lay the foundation for a successful recovery.

A healthy diet in recovery helps individuals struggling with drug and alcohol addiction create a better balance in their lives. A focus on good nutrition, whether during therapy, during detox, or after recovery allows patients to become physically and mentally healthier, and establish an environment that will help them maintain sobriety.

Artesian Wellness & Recovery's insight:

At Artesian we utilize a holistic approach to recovery. One of the areas we look at is an individual's nutritional choices. So very often an addict's dietary preference will be one loaded with sugar. These sugars stimulate the same receptors in the brain drugs and alcohol do. We believe in many instances a poor diet, especially one laden with sugar, can be triggers for relapse.
