It's getting there, but still dependent on the teacher correcting the knowledge gaps when it is the student who knows usually right away when he/she doesn't understand. That is when it should be addressed, not during the assessment phase. Then it is too late.

Have you wondered what it means when people talk about adaptive testing? This post helps answer this question. After a short introducation on "the Olden Days" of testing (as in paper and pencils) you quickly find out that adpative testing will be coming to us as we move to testing on computers. Specically adaptive testing allows learners to be challenged based on their knowledge. Easier questions happen at the beginning, and based on learners answers the questions will become more difficult if answered correctly, or easier if answered incorrectly. There is a short video that explains this in more detail.

This is where it can all go so wrong. The second a child encounters a question or statement he does not understand, is the second that needs to be explained/worked with until he does understand. Otherwise you pile confusion upon confusion = pain = don't want to do = upset.

Spot on. The fact you, the student, can detect immediately when you don't understand and it allows you to go off and gain understanding and then return to the original path is far more effective then waiting for feedback after an assessment. By then you have attempted, with a lower awareness level, to assimilate new material. But, that is not fully possible as you are not fully aware due to the earlier confusion encountered.

 The last :30 seconds is the most important. The emphasis cannot be on testing and higher test scores. For all this technology to be truly effective, it must actually increase understanding and ability to apply knowledge learned to life. Testing well is a byproduct, not an end-all.
