Sidebeat Music with Recording Artist Larissa Lam and Host Sonia Harley

Sidebeat Music with Recording Artist Larissa Lam and Host Sonia Harley | ActorsE chat | Scoop.it
Sidebeat Music is a show on Actors Entertainment, a channel on the Actors Podcast Network, a Pepper Jay Production.
Pepper Jay's insight:

Larissa Lam talks about her career and her latest album, Love and Discovery.

Larissa Lam constantly surprises people with her big, powerful voice. This petite, Chinese-American singer-songwriter has toured all over the U.S and Asia, captivating audiences at major venues such as The Dolby (formerly Kodak) Theater, Lincoln Center, The Grammy Museum and Staples Center. With every performance, she brings incredible energy and passion not normally associated with nice Asian girls like her.

As Lam recalls, “I had someone once tell me ‘You’re the Asian with the most attitude I’ve ever met’ and he meant it as a compliment.”

For more than a decade, Lam’s bold musical “attitude” and smart songwriting have been showcased on numerous critically acclaimed albums including her upcoming 4th solo album, Love & Discovery. For the new album, Lam collaborated with producer, David Longoria, who has worked on numerous platinum selling recordings with artists such as Sting, George Michael and De La Soul. Longoria has had success on the Billboard dance charts with CeCe Peniston peaking at #14 and hitting #21 with his hit Zoon Baloomba in 2013. Lam’s new songs aim to make an even bigger impact on the charts.

On Love & Discovery, Lam takes listeners on a musical experience that includes EDM, R&B and jazz. More impressively, she penned all 12 songs on the album. These lyrically and melodically rich songs are not just about love, but a discovery of one’s inner strength and character. Love & Discovery has been almost four-year journey that pushed Lam to the brink of walking away from music.

Lam explains, “I had many moments of self-doubt and that’s definitely reflected in some of the songs. I encountered many obstacles along the way and really had to ask if this was something that I should be doing. In the end, I believe the struggle inspired better songs.”

More than just your average artist, Lam picked up the nickname “The Singing CFO” when she put her Business Economics degree from UCLA to work as the Chief Financial Officer of NSOUL Records. It was also at NSOUL where Lam’s singing career began when she became one of the lead singers of the gospel/techno/house group Nitro Praise. Legendary DJ, Scott Blackwell, produced the group. Lam toured nationally and recorded three albums with the group before embarking on her own solo career.

A prolific writer, Lam has composed original music that has been heard across the TV landscape including on Days of Our Lives, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Dr. Oz, E!, TLC and more. She has also produced and written music that has appeared in feature films (Dead Man Down starring Colin Farrell) and video games (Sleeping Dogs). Her song, “Breathing More” appears in the video game, Dance Dance Revolution: Universe 2. In addition to being a recording artist, Lam spent nine years hosting a weekly talk show on JUCE TV (formerly JCTV) broadcasted across the US and on almost every continent.

Lam’s relationship with music began at age five in her hometown of Diamond Bar, CA when she was forced to play the piano by her mother. However, growing up the only daughter of Chinese immigrants and a straight A-student, Larissa was brainwashed into thinking she would become a doctor, just like her father. By age 13, she had written her first song. Before graduating from high school, Larissa realized she had no desire to become a doctor as her parents hoped. Instead, she felt a call to become a music producer and songwriter. Now, she cannot imagine a life apart from music.

While she easily embraced her identity as a musician, Larissa struggled with her cultural identity and initially rejected her heritage.

She explains, “When I was a little girl, my favorite movie was Grease. I wanted to be ‘Sandy’. I wanted blond hair and blue eyes but I would look in the mirror and just see plain black hair and dull brown eyes. All the popular girls in school had that “All-American” look and not the Asian-American look. As an adult now, I’m proud of the way God has uniquely made me. I now cherish the rich heritage my family has given me that enables me to bridge cultures.”

As a result of her newfound appreciation for her identity, Larissa is very passionate about promoting diversity in media. In May 2014, she was invited to represent artists in a historic White House briefing and summit of Asian American Pacific Islander faith leaders. She served for two years on the Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month committee for the city of Los Angeles under Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. She has spoken at numerous universities such as Yale, UCLA and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Lam hopes her music will continue to cross cultures and empower others to shatter stereotypes.

Larissa currently resides in Pasadena, CA with her husband and fellow artist, Only Won. In her spare time (when she has some), she enjoys watching TV shows like Person of Interest, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Once Upon a Time and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. She is a big musical theater geek and NBA fan. A highlight of her life is singing the national anthem at a Laker (her fave team) game. She also has an unhealthy obsession with Garfield and penguins, which she probably shouldn’t be confessing here.

Pepper Jay's insight:
ActorsE Chat with Heavyweight Boxer and Actor David “Nino” Rodriguez

Heavyweight Champion David “Nino” Rodriguez
Never give up and always show up. That was the early life-lesson heavyweight boxer David “Nino” Rodriguez most attributes the success of his career to. Of his 36 professional bouts, he has an impressive record of 34 KOs with 24 of them being in the first round, a number that relieved Mike Tyson of his legendary first-round record.

Rodriguez was born in El Paso, Texas. He first hit the bags and began learning simple combinations at the early age of 5. At age 14 he had his first amateur fight against a Junior Olympic Champion. He was a bundle of nerves and was beat up badly in the first round; but in the second, knocked his seasoned adversary out cold. It shocked the tournament and garnered headlines. But more than that, Rodriguez had now been given the taste of blood, which only served to further fuel his passion for the brutal but beautiful craft of boxing. The training was strict – a discipline that his life desperately needed. And he who would one day become the “Pride of the 915” had begun to succeed in turning his virtually inexpressible aggression into something greater than himself.

As Rodriguez took on more fights, he quickly drew attention by pummeling his opponents and progressively sparring veteran fighters. After contending at the amateur level for 7 years, David entered into his professional career. He beat out Manuel Alberto Pucheta by a TKO to win the WBA NABA Heavyweight Title. He defeated Owen Beck in El Paso to a sellout crowd and took the WBC Mexican Heavyweight Championship. And he crushed overmatched Byron Polley for the NABU Heavyweight Title.

During training for the first of his 2011 fights, Rodriguez survived a brutal knife attack, the result of which was a near-death experience and a facial scar that runs clear from his ear to his chin. Shortly thereafter, he also suffered an injury to his knee, sidetracking what was intended to be an explosive, career-defining year. The now top-contender, ranked number 10 on the planet and perfectly poised to seize the title of Heavyweight Champion of the World, found himself at a crossroads. To fight or not to fight. It was a difficult decision – the most difficult of his career. The attack had taken its toll on him both physically and mentally. He struggled with the decision for months. But in the end, the natural-born fighter in him won. And so, uncertain of his future and underestimating the trauma he’d sustained, he stepped back into the ring. But in the last 10 seconds of the last round of a bloody fight he was edging out on the score cards, David was knocked out cold. It was his first loss – ever – and cause for an entire reevaluation of his life. The “Pride of the 915” now knew he had to give himself a chance to heal, and so set down his gloves for a hiatus of undetermined length.

Unable to sit idle, and with an ever-growing urge to assist his community, David began telling others about his story through an anti bullying campaign that started organically but has now begun to pick up momentum. He speaks to detention facilities and school districts with a non-profit organization called “Lucid Love” (www.lucidlove.org), openly sharing a story of himself being bullied and in return being a bully to others. He speaks to the rage he carried into the ring and the roots from which it stemmed. He travels the country delivering a powerful and impactful message that is striking a nerve with countless who feel they have no voice. David has a newfound cause – and has taken his fight from the ring to the victims of this ever-increasing issue by raising awareness of bullying in its many current forms in our culture.

When asked about his secret to such an outstanding boxing career, Rodriguez sites “When I enter the ring, I see through my opponent – I see right through to his heart and soul. I gather myself, remaining calm and calculated, and when the moment presents itself – unleash.” Whether David ever steps back into the boxing ring remains to be seen. But one thing is for certain: he will continue to fight – whether in the ring or out of it.

On ActorsE Chat David “Nino” Rodriguez talks about his boxing career, of being a top heavyweight contender, and the knife attack where he almost lost my life. His final record was 36-2-34 knockouts. He currently talks to detention facilities and schools about bullying and his personal experiences with bullying. David is putting in his time now to help the community and has acted in a few independent films coming out in 2016.

Exclusive Interview with Actress and Human Rights Activist Mary Apick by Brenda Epperson | ActorsE chat | Scoop.it
Pepper Jay's insight:

Mary began her acting career as a child star in Iran. One of her earliest successes was Octopus, a long running television show where Mary performed in political and satirical skits that helped change and liberalize the society. Going on to star in countless television shows, feature films and plays, Mary became one of the most popular stars in Iran. She was the first actress in the Iranian Motion Picture history to win the Moscow International Film Festival Best Actress Award for her performance in Dead End, written and directed by Parviz Sayyad.

The Iranian revolution forced Mary to flee the country and find her new home in the United States. Here in America Mary starred in two critically acclaimed films, The Mission and Checkpoint. She also played featured roles in productions such as the NBC miniseries On Wings of Eagles and produced the MGM release, Mind Games. While working with her partner, Bob Yari, on the Academy Award winning film Crash, Mary expanded her involvement in socially significant projects. She continued her work with Mr. Sayyad in the famous play (KHAR) The Ass to have more than 400 productions of the play in different cities Globally thru the years.

Among many awards she recently received the prestigious ARPA International Film Festival Foundation Award for her Humanitarian efforts using the theater to mirror the true voices and the stories of the women of the Middle East. Theater has always been Mary’s greatest passion. In 2005, she wrote, directed and produced the politically charged Critic’s Choice play Beneath The Veil which was presented in many prestigious venues such as Lincoln and Kennedy Center and Geffen playhouse.

Mary has also created many projects for children, including A Fairy Tale In The Forest and Jewel of The Night, which gives the children of Iranian expatriates a bio lingual fairy tale show and an opportunity to learn about their parents’ culture and homeland.

Throughout her adult life, Mary has remained fiercely committed to improving the lives of women and children, especially in the Middle East. Through her work as an advocate for clearing land mines and reducing their use, and appearing as a spokesperson before the U.S. Congress and in all media, Mary remains vigilant and vocal in the pursuit of all freedoms.

Check out the acclaimed book “The Green Card Stories”, that featured Mary Apick. The book which won the “Best of Photojournalism Award 2012″ which was presented by Mary to President Obama at the White house. This year she guest starred with Clair Danes in reoccurring role in the award winning Show Time television series “Homeland.”

Lucky Harmon Lucky is a Multi-talented Pop Singer, Songwriter, Actor, and father of two, originally hailing from Baltimore, Maryland. Now transplanted to Atlanta, Georgia, he is looking to make his mark on the Pop/Dance/EDM scene. Citing Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson, Calvin Harris, David Guetta and The Black Eyed Peas as influences, Lucky’s inspirations for his own music are drawn from both life experience and his constant search for fresh new sounds. When he hears a sound or beat that moves him, he immediately hits the studio and sets to work and gets his pen and starts writing depending on the inspiration and direction of the record he takes.

Music has always been a part of Lucky’s life. Throughout his childhood and teen years, he participated in chorus, vocal ensemble, and show choir, performing locally and statewide. This instilled him with stage presence and a sense of showmanship from an early age.

His passion for music has only continued to deepen. In 2008, Lucky released his first EP, Welcome to My World, produced by Matthew “Teezy” White with More Than Music Productions at the Baker Boyz Entertainment recording studio. He has also recorded with Rufus Blaq, who he met while performing at Packard Music Hall in Warren, Ohio, and has opened for Jae Millz of Young Money. His singles “Narcissist” and “Love Has a Mind of Its Own” have filled dance floors from Eastcoast to Westcoast. Also “Narcissist” has been on 100 radio stations throughout the us.

In 2010, Lucky experienced a tragic setback when he lost his manager and close family friend, Milton Chmielewski, suddenly. During this time, Lucky turned to acting, auditioning for and starring in numerous commercials, television shows, and movies. His resume includes roles in The Vampire Diaries, Drop Dead Divas, House of Cards, Veep, and Fast & Furious 7 etc. He signed to Linda Townsend Management Inc. for acting 5 yrs ago while residing in md. He continues his acting career in Atlanta through numerous connections and industry personnel met upon working in productions on set.

While he was in Atlanta filming for FF7, he met A&R Executive Rob Medley through a chance encounter in a hotel lobby. Medley heard Lucky sing and soon introduced him to his business partner, Grammy-nominated producer Eric “88 Fingaz” Parham. Shortly afterwards, Lucky was signed to Keys2Life Entertainment, LLC, whom now branched out to The Nice Guyz and started laying down tracks like “Idolize Me”, “Luv Under Pressure”, and “Party Life” with 88 Fingaz and Rob Medley at Tree Sound Studios.

Lucky is eager to take his career to the next level and share his passion with the world. He has the looks, talent, and experience to launch the next wave of music. With his positive spirit and incredible work ethic, he will be creating smash hits far into the future.

British Actors in Hollywood on ActorsE Chat with celebrity host Sandro Monetti

Celebrity host Sandro Monetti hosts ActorsE Chat with guest British actors Jeffrey Postlethwaite, Matthew Postletwaite, and Louisa Lytton.

The Postlethwaite Twins
Jeffrey and Matthew Postlethwaite were born in Whitehaven, Cumbria, the sons of Susan Postlethwaite and Ian Postlethwaite. The Twins’ big break came on the acclaimed crime drama “Peaky Blinders,” the pair recently moved to Los Angeles, California.

Matthew Postlethwaite
Matthew Postlethwaite is an actor and writer, known for #Twinning (2015), Shooting Clerks (2015) and The White King.

Matthew became interested in acting following an appearance on a British documentary series with his brother Jeffrey.

Matthew often appears alongside his twin brother, Jeffrey Postlethwaite.

Remained in character throughout the entire production of Shooting Clerks. Various day players and cameo stars were shocked to discover that he wasn’t American when filming wrapped.

His nickname, ‘Old Soul’, refers to a scene from Shooting Clerks in which his character refers to himself as such. The reason it stuck was that due to a bout of group (cast and crew) corpsing during filming, Matt had to repeat the line fifty times.

Jeffrey Postlethwaite
Jeffrey Postlethwaite is an English actor, recognized for his role as Henry in Peaky Blinders (2013-2014) Thomas Melby in Blood (2014), and Carl in Rough Cut (2015). He is also the identical twin brother of English actor, Matthew Postlethwaite.

Jeffrey is currently studying at Groundlings Improv Theatre and Beverly Hills Playhouse in Los Angeles.

Here, she learnt from some of the best tutors, and was able to develop her skills as both an actress, and an all-round performer. It was this platform that led to Louisa securing her first professional role, as the innocent schoolgirl Ruby Allen in BBC1′s BAFTA award winning EastEnders. Here, Louisa became an overnight sensation, racking up column inches and piles of critical acclaim as she tackled the many controversial storylines that the EastEnders writers through her way.

Since leaving EastEnders, Louisa’s star continued to rise, as she joined another iconic British television show, The Bill. Here, she played the inexperienced and shy police officer Beth Green. Following this, Louisa has enjoyed a whole host of varied roles, from parts in the internationally successful American Pie franchise, to the British Shakespeare Company’s productions of both A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Much Ado About Nothing.

Away from acting, Louisa is also an accomplished dancer, having competed in the fourth series of Strictly Come Dancing, where she successfully reached the quarter-finals. Following on from this, Louisa toured the country as part of the sold-out Strictly Come Dancing arena tour, and represented the United Kingdom in the 2008 Eurovision Dance Contest.

Currently, Louisa is busy as a result of her role in the new ITV comedy drama The Edge of Heaven; an exciting new prime-time comedy based around the trials and tribulations of a family running a guest house in Margate. For this part, Louisa is working alongside a talented cast that includes Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners, Him and Her)

Pepper Jay's insight:

Rick La Fond brought Hollywood online in the mid-90s and has changed the way business is done in the entertainment industry. Backed by a business career in actor services and 23 years as a SAG-AFTRA actor, he has brought several companies to market, and has been instrumental in helping them grow and thrive.

Hailing from Cleveland, Rick earned two degrees from Case Western Reserve University: a B.S. in economics and finance 1986, and an MBA in organizational behavior and marketing 1988, before moving to Chicago to earn an MFA in acting from The Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University – 1991. He worked his way up through the Chicago theatre scene into mainstream TV and film out of both Chicago and Los Angeles.

Shortly after arriving in Los Angeles, Rick worked with ShowFax, the company that revolutionized the way audition scene materials – “sides” – are delivered to actors, agents, managers, casting directors, and studio executives. He then moved to CastNet, which brought actor services online. Rick single-handedly brought about 85% of Hollywood’s professionals onto the Internet for the first time. CastNet grew from serving 10,000 to 100,000 actors.

In 2001 Rick joined Bob Stewart and created Now Casting, a game-changer in actor services and a complete information delivery upgrade for the entire entertainment industry. He is currently the key executive in charge of member services, operations, industry relations, marketing and strategic alliances.

Starting in the Fall 2012, he and Bob developed iActingStudios, another first in the entertainment internet universe. iActing Studios already features over 50 of Hollywood’s finest Master Teachers of Acting Techniques and Career Innovations, featuring hundreds of hours of recorded classes, live online seminars, and one-on-one coaching. Already a stunning achievement, iActing Studios is on target to become the world’s most powerful online tool for actors in search of a place start or advance their careers and craft.

Pepper Jay's insight:

C.J. Valleroy’s love for acting was ignited at age six watching Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s kitchen combat
scene in the film Mr & Mrs Smith. As fate would have it, eight years later C.J. was cast in the role of the
incorrigible, young Louie Zamperini in the Angelina Jolie directed feature, Unbroken, which was released
worldwide on Christmas Day, 2014.

Born in Oklahoma City, C.J. and his family moved to Altamonte Springs, Florida when he was six months old.
He began modeling and dancing at age 10, and at 14 moved out to Los Angeles in hopes of pursuing a career
in the entertainment industry.
Within his first year in Los Angeles, C.J. made his 2013 television debut as Max in Nickelodeon’s Deadtime Stories. 2014 marked C.J.’s film debut in Unbroken, the astonishing true story of Louis Zamperini, a troubled youth who channeled his defiance into running, and became an international track star at the Berlin
Olympics. As World War II broke out, Zamperini enlisted as an airman where he survived a plane crash, and several Japanese prisoner of war camps. Most recently, CJ was cast as Charlie Drake in Amblin Entertainment/TNT’s 2015 pilot Lumen, the story of a boy (Charlie) who accidentally transports his entire
family into the world of a writer’s creation.

Charity work lives at the heart of C.J.’s every day life. As a result of his aunt’s long battle with cancer, he began knitting caps for her – a different colored cap for every month. When she passed, she asked him to continue knitting, and he has hundreds of knitted caps for cancer patients in chemotherapy clinics as well as
Ronald McDonald Houses across the country.

Between filming, C.J. continues to pursue dancing, a passion he has nurtured since he began walking. His most recent engagement was as a 2014 SparKid dancer for half-time performances at LA Sparks games.

After an impressive stint at KABC, Diaz moved to KCBS as lead anchor with a special emphasis on specials and mini documentaries. At KCBS, Laura received the L.A. Press Club’s highest honor, the Joseph M. Quinn Award for journalistic excellence and distinction. She and her team also took home the prestigious national Imagen Award for Best Local Information Program. Her special series on undercover ATF Agent Billy Queen, who penetrated a notorious motorcycle gang, earned her back-to-back honors, with a Golden Mike and a local Emmy. In 2006, KCBS posted first place in the ratings for the first time in more than thirty years, with Diaz and fellow teammates anchoring the centerpiece broadcast.

In 2012 Diaz moved on to KTTV, where she has anchored several newscasts on FOX 11 including Weekend Edition and Studio 11 LA.

She currently sits on the advisory board of “The Joyful Child Foundation,” started by children’s advocate Erin Runnion. She is also a member of the Pasadena Playhouse Diversity Committee.

What she found was not pretty. Her 14 year old daughter had met an older man online and had setup a day and time to meet this total stranger. She went through her cell phone and found out that her perfect daughter wasn’t so perfect. She called him and thanked him. She feels like it SAVED her daughter’s LIFE. Who knows what could have happened to this young teen and hundreds of teens who are doing the unknown Behind Locked Doors.
Tomel moved back to LA in 2011 to make industry connections, to network in Hollywood and to developed project to the next level. Behind Locked Doors script has been read by, Lou Gosset Jr, Charles S. Dutton, Vivica A. Fox, Brian McNight, Cuba Gooding Jr, Lou Diamond Phillips, Bai Ling, and several other
inspiring actors. Tomel has several LOIs from Hollywood actor, distribution and very interested investors currently reviewing the project. Tomel hopes to start production as soon as the end of 2015 year.
Tomel was born in St. Louis, Mo. as Tommie Griggs Jr., the son of Orlette Griggs (Walton) and Tommie Griggs Sr. an entrepreneur and inspiring musician at that time. He has 2 siblings. He remembers his father telling him when they hung out at 10 years old, saying you need to start now thinking about what you want to be. Tomel would think to himself, but I’m just 10 years old. Later in life he knew why he’d continued to put the pressure on him to decide. Growing up with the interest in sports, Tomel played little league and looked to have a promising career in any sport he played. Attending Visual and Performing School in St. Louis he also showed a promising career as a musician. With the interest of playing Bass guitar and Alto Sax, class mates and he later started their own local band in elementary school. He often wonders what his life would be like if his father would not have taking a chance and believing in more than just settling for a blue collar job.
In 1980 his dad up rooted the entire family to California to pursue the American dream, music and acting careers for his kids. Tomel’s dad believed it was the best decision he could have made for his family. Tomel first year in high school, a starting wide receiver at Wilson high school in Long Beach where he was injured the day before his first game. That day his life took a serious detour. His focused then turned to girls, hanging out with the wrong crowds, discouraged of a future of the unknown. He had his first child, son Jermaine Griggs in his junior year of high school. He went on to have 2 beautiful daughters. In learning from all his mistakes in life today, being an absent father has been the worst feeling of his, a big sincere apology to all my children.
Tomel is on his path to becoming a very successful writer, producer, director and entrepreneur some day in the near future, happily married, living in his dream home in LA or Scottsdale. He currently has a movie in development and branding his own new fashion line.

Pepper Jay's insight:

Rapper: Jaronie When most people learn someone is 6'5" they think basketball player, high jumper, slam dunker, and/or baller. Creatively, each one of those words describes the talent, and excitement that Jaronie brings to the game. We're not describing basketball, we're talking about a game that has been long played by incredible Mc's, and lyricists. Jaronie's favorite jersey is #7 "rapper" and Jaronie's court is the world.

At the age of 13, Jaronie found a love for the arts, dabbling with singing and theater. However it wasn't enough to keep him from the streets. Moving from one home to the next was never a comfortable place to be in. So, Jaronie found his home in rhyming words. At the age 16, Jaronie experienced his first taste of an official studio recording with S.U.N.E Records. It was short lived. From this experience, his personal studio was born. Like a roller coaster ride, collaboration's and new songs were his playground, leading him to an unexpected partnership with Young Freddo.

Jaronie's talents lead him to collaborations with artists such as John Boy, Shawty Boy, and Yung Dre Dre, putting him on the map as one of the best rapper's that the State of Ohio had to offer. Word traveled fast and his talents led him to a featured spot on the Coast2Coast Mixtape Hosted By Kid Ink, Vol. 237.

The popularity of Jaronie's song led him to be a featured guest on WSE 91.7 fm radio. After being featured on WSE 91.7 fm radio, Jaronie was ask to create the theme song for the show, which is still currently in rotation.

Jaronie now lives in the City of Los Angeles where he is breaking new ground with his graphics company "LazyEye Graphycz". He's also sphere-heading his lable X.G.I.S, along with guiding his artists' Shroom, and Pshrop to a larger platform.

Clearly the sky is the limit and there's no basket he cant dunk. The world will gladly sit on the sidelines eating a bag of popcorn watching Jaronie achieve the true American dream. His amazing charm and talent will always leave you entertained with a smile on your face, and wanting more.
