Planning/Grouping in Literacy Instruction

Students in this fourth-grade classroom work in simultaneous groups or at literacy work stations on specific skills identified by the teachers. Some have Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and other sudents need explicit comprehension instruction. The students are grouped according to specific skill needs, the assessment is continuous, and the groups are ever changing.

I used to let students sit where they wanted in the classroom. I quickly learned that this is rarely a good idea. Now, I begin with assigned seats. They are posted on the Smartboard when they come to class on the first day.
