"The same political structure (in some cases the same individuals) that have conducted or colluded with decades of deliberately making the schools that serve children like mine inferior to the ones that serve their own children, now feign concern and offer longsuffering parents the 'choice' of charter schools.

"Here’s the lie: It’s a false choice.

"Had these public officials and institutions fulfilled their legal and moral obligations (or would they yet), I wouldn’t have to make a 'choice' for my children or grandchildren between continued inadequate education and a real one. That’s not choice; that’s extortion."

We all need to get paid. But the evidence suggests it undermines our intrinsic motivations.
David B. Cohen's insight:

How much should people earn? Even if resources were unlimited, it would be difficult to stipulate your ideal salary. Intuitively, one would think that higher pay should produce better results, but scientific evidence indicates that the link between compensation, motivation and performance is much more complex. In fact, research suggests that even if we let people decide how much they should earn, they would probably not enjoy their job more.

Even those who highlight the motivational effects of money accept that pay alone is not sufficient. The basic questions are: Does money make our jobs more enjoyable? Or can higher salaries actually demotivate us?
