Six killed after gas leak at a coalmine in Spain

Six killed after gas leak at a coalmine in Spain | Accidents and Occupational Health & Safety | Scoop.it
A gas leak at a coalmine in northwestern Spain killed six men and injured five on Monday in the country's deadliest mining accident in nearly two decades, officials said.
Tai Wakelin-Gray's insight:

A gas leak in a coal mine in Madrid, Spain, lead to the death of 6 men, and left 5 others injured. The leaked gas was said to have been methane, and the accident was said to have been, “The country’s deadliest accident in nearly two decades,” occurring so rapidly, miners explained that they didn’t have time to put on their protective masks. This incident raises the question of whether or not their are enough safety measures in place. Also, if they are aware of the deadly gases surrounding their work environment, should they be wearing gas masks constantly? These are some of the problems I hope to solve in the future.

Fatal crash driver was drunk, disqualified, police allege

Fatal crash driver was drunk, disqualified, police allege | Accidents and Occupational Health & Safety | Scoop.it
AN 18-year-old man will appear in court today after a 23-year-old Coraki woman was killed in a single vehicle crash on Naughtons Gap Rd near Bentley yesterday.
Tai Wakelin-Gray's insight:

This report highlights the fatal crash of a car driven by not only a disqualified, but an also drunk driver, that lead to the death of a 23 year old back seat passenger. This accident created the eighth death on Northern Rivers road in 2014 alone. This article intrigues me as investigating crash sites similar to this is a career option for me, however, I’m more so interested in why nothing’s changed yet. Why has nothing been implemented to make this area safer to drive after the other 7 deaths? How many more deaths will it take before someone realises something needs to be done?

2 dead in head-on crash on Route 44 in Middleborough
WCVB Boston
The crash happened around 1 p.m. near the Holiday Inn at 43 Harding St. in Middleborough.
Tai Wakelin-Gray's insight:

This article shows how the head on collision of two cars on a busy road lead to the death of two people. Civilians interviewed in this report announced that incidents like this weren't all that rare and that it's a busy area, which raises the question, why hasn't anything been done to make driving through this area less risky? I found this article particularly intriguing as investigating car crashes is something I'm looking into, being able to comprehend why such an area is prone to accidents, and determining what can be done to change it.

A wrong-way driver on a California freeway was arrested Sunday after being accused of causing a pre-dawn crash that left six people dead, authorities said.
Tai Wakelin-Gray's insight:

After driving east on the westbound lanes, Olivia Culbreath was arrested on suspicion of both driving under the influence and manslaughter. After being found travelling in the wrong direction, Culbreath was associated with the pre-dawn crash that saw the death of six people, as well as seriously injuring herself. This report holds interest to me as I would love to be able to take horrific incidents such as this, determine the events that took place and design a way to reduce the risks of a reoccurrence.

Tai Wakelin-Gray's insight:

This mini movie shows how important safety procedures are, as well as demonstrating how an investigation would proceed after an incident has occurred. This is relevant to me as it demonstrates a field of work that I'm interested in joining.
