Frogs, Bicycles, Imo, UD = MC2 and the Restaurant at the end of the Universe. It would be nice to think that travelers with a disability were free to travel the Universe with nothing more than their trusty towel. In reality, travel even to a local attraction, is far more difficult than it needs to be.

FEWER than 20 per cent of people with disabilities enjoy annual holiday, many because there is nowhere suitable to stay says Fergus Ewing.

There are many reasons why disabled people decide not to take a holiday. It could be for financial reasons; for lack of good information about accessibility; for being unsure about accessible travel arrangements to name but a few. At least the Scottish government are aware of the potential market for accessible tourism.

A disabled artist is launching the UK's first network of holiday cottages, all of which will be wheelchair-accessible and identical in every detail. The first Flat Spaces bungalow should be in place later this year beside a steam railway in the middle of the Hampshire countryside - the foundations were laid this week on a plot next to six existing holiday rental properties in Ropley - with doors due to open next spring. This should be followed by further Flat Spaces developments in Surrey, Kent and the Scottish borders. Every one of the accessible three-bedroom properties will be identical on the inside and will be larger and more spacious than most other holiday homes, and will be built in a factory before being installed as a prefabricated building. Because each building will be identical inside, the equipment - such as toilets, light switches, hoists, ovens and kettles - will all be in the same place in each location.
