The typeface dyslexie

The specific characteristics of the dyslexie

font make it easier for people with dyslexia
to distinguish individual letters. This reduces
the number of reading errors as well as the
effort it takes to read a text.

Social networks and accessibility: A rather sad picture | Marco’s accessibility blog

In recent months, several popular social networks relaunched or updated their services, and one new player came out onto the plain field that, initially hyped, now is hardly talked about any more.

Unfortunately, what all these have in common, is a great number of problems when it comes to accessibility. This is not just for the blind and visually impaired, but also considering people with other kinds of disabilities.

Rising to a difficult challenge: the European School of Volunteering | Openlearning & the voluntary sector

I’ve recently been very impressed by some free courses offered by the online European School of Volunteering (EVS), a collaboration between Spanish, Romanian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Greek and Italian organizations that was established as part of the 2011 Year of Volunteering.

New technologies for senior citizens

Course objectives: Ageing populations pose major economic, budgetary and social challenges. New technologies, addressing solutions for distant monitoring services are a social necessity and a field of great interest for the world of volunteering. The modules are:

Ageing Population (2 Hours).

Voice choices Survey

We need students' help in selecting the voice actors who will form the basis of a new, free high quality synthetic speech voice. This will open up the world of free high quality voiced text to speech to everyone in FE, skills and HE sectors.

There are 7 voices each speaking for less than a minute.
Please can you encourage / forward this to students of all ages (or those who work with them) to listen to them and rate them for us - we need responses in by the end of Monday? It's a quick job - only 4 brief questions and a Yes/No recommendation per voice.
Any students' input will be valuable, but especially if you know of any students who are dyslexic or visually impaired or for whom English is not their first language - the prime candidates for text-to-speech software.
Apologies for the rush - we're trying to launch the voice in mid Spring but Christmas makes a hole in the voice recording schedule!

Hear them and rate them at http://tinyurl.com/jtdvoice

Many thanks

Inclusive Design Toolkit Home

Welcome to the inclusive design toolkit, which aims to answer three critical questions:

1. What is inclusive design?
Inclusive design applies an understanding of customer diversity to the design of mainstream products to better satisfy the needs of more people.
2. Why do inclusive design?
Products that are more inclusive can reach a wider market, improve customer satisfaction and drive business success, especially given the ageing population.
3. How to get started?
Getting started involves understanding what is different about an inclusive design process and then working out what changes are needed to actually do it.

The female voice - we need feedback on free text to speech for post 16 learners
The female voice - we need feedback on free text to speech for post 16 learners | Accessible online learning: supporting disabled students | Scoop.it

Learners recently helped us choose the male voice for text to speech for post 16 learners. We had over 350 responses from a wide range of learning contexts and ages!

Now we need your learner’s to help us select from 7 female voice actors to decide who will form the basis of a new, free high quality synthetic speech voice. With a high quality female voice to supplement the male voice we hope to open up the world of free high quality text to speech to everyone in FE, skills and HE sectors. We’ve got a range of voices with a good mix of regional accents to select from.

It’s quick, its easy, its online and the deadline is 21st December…

There are 7 voices each speaking for less than a minute and you can listen to them all and score them at http://tinyurl.com/jtdVoice2

Please can you forward this to your best contacts working directly with learners to ask them to invite / encourage / cajole students to listen to them and rate them for us in before the end of term and certainly before 21st December? It’s a quick job – only 4 questions and a Yes/No recommendation per voice.

Once again, apologies for the rush – we’re trying to work around Christmas!

Many thanks
