You can download add-ins for the Firefox web browser too add extra functionality. There are add-ins available for a huge range of tasks, but some are particularly useful for improving the accessibility of the web pages you view.Firefox Reader allows viewers so customise font, size and colour quickly.


Text to Voice is a Plugin which will read out the text that you highlight on a webpage. This can be a useful way to check the meaning of a word, sentence or paragraph.

WordTalk - A free text-to-speech plugin for Microsoft Word. For people with reading and writing difficulties, having text reinforced by hearing it read aloud can be very useful.

A free Windows text-to-speech plugin for Microsoft Word, developed in collaboration with CALL Scotland at the University of Edinburgh

 

It will speak the text of the document and will highlight it as it goes, offers a talking spellchecker and will save text as mp3 format.

You can download add-ins for the Internet Explorer web browser too add extra functionality.

 

There are add-ins available for a huge range of tasks, but some are particularly useful for improving the accessibility of the web pages you view.. CleanPage takes away the clutter on a webpage making it easier to read the main content allowing readers to select font set and customise settings. The text to speech functions allow users to select their own voices on their computer. You can control the speed of reading and the read back font settings.

Comic Life: Accessible induction resources at Glasgow School of Art Library

This case study highlights the work carried out by the Library and Learning Resources Service at the Glasgow School of Art. The podcast features Jude Boyd, IT librarian at the Glasgow School of Art who explains how the library team worked together to create a ‘comic book’ style induction resources for students and staff. The goal was to create an alternative and a more visual style of presenting information for library users which would make the information more accessible to a wider range of users.
