Fluid - Turn Your Favorite Web Apps into Real Mac Apps.

Fluid - Turn Your Favorite Web Apps into Real Mac Apps. | academiPad | Scoop.it
Fluid lets you create a Real Mac App (or 'Fluid App') out of any website or web application, effectively turning your favorite web apps into desktop apps.
academiPad's insight:

Fluid is a great free Mac app that lets you transform a browser app into a true desktop app. It's a godsent for me, since I really really don't like browser apps. The window gets lost in all the other browser tabs, and I constantly get into troubles with my smart browsing gestures to go back and forward. Anyways, this app solves that, and now Hootsuite lives as a true Mac app in my dock. Aahh...

Switch: Easily Transfer Open Tabs To Another Browser

Switch: Easily Transfer Open Tabs To Another Browser | academiPad | Scoop.it
Most Internet users have one browser that they prefer to use. Whether it is Chrome, Firefox, Opera or Safari (or Internet Explorer, but no one likes Internet Explorer).
academiPad's insight:

This is a tiny, free, and incredibly useful app when you are using more than one browser. For example, I decided to ditch Safari and instead use Firefox for my academic work and chrome for academiPad. Wit Switch, I can quickly push pages over to the other browser in case something for the other project comes up. Brilliant!

Working On The Go | Inside Higher Ed

Working On The Go | Inside Higher Ed | academiPad | Scoop.it

Starbucks is one of my favorite places to work. Coffee, company, and a relaxing atmosphere help me concentrate and keep focused on my task. As it can be a pain to lug my laptop everywhere, I have a tablet and a mobile phone that I use when working away from my desk. But working on my iPad is only useful if I have the right tools to support my workflow, and the ability to access my documents across platforms. This post provides hacks for productively managing a workflow across different devices and working in any location!

The 30 Best iPad apps for college students and academics | academiPad | Scoop.it
This post discusses my personal best 30 iPad apps for college students, grad students, professors and everybody else in university and academia.
academiPad's insight:

This is my personal list of the 30 best iPad apps for college / grad students and professors. It is not one of these countless posts that list a bunch of generic apps like Safari, Facebook and iBooks. Those are not really specific to people in university, and I also bet you knew those already. I am also not going to throw a list at you filled with niche iPad apps targeted at one particular subject or at earlier years of education. So what will you find here?

This is a list of my favorite iPad apps that are useful for everybody in academia – college students, grad students, postdocs, lecturers and professors – because they help us excel in our core workflows: Writing, Reading, Thinking, Presenting and Organizing our academic lives.

Stop wasting time closing all apps in the multitasking bar

Stop wasting time closing all apps in the multitasking bar | academiPad | Scoop.it
Will closing apps from the multitasking bar speed app your iPad and preserve battery? No - that's a myth. Save yourself the time and don't do it.
academiPad's insight:

I originally intended to write a post on how to speed up the iPad (because mine is running slow), and most posts I read mentioned to manually shut down apps in the multitasking bar. Wrong! In most cases, it won't change a thing. Good thing I researched this thoroughly - I don't want to make the same mistake as so many other bloggers.

Still a little surprised that so many people believe in and tell this myth (even some people working as Genius for Apple), I decided to write this as its own post. Read it, you will be surprised. And: You will know for what few apps it makes sense to fiddle around in the multitasking bar.

The post I originally wanted to write about speeing up your iPad is coming soon on http://www.joachim-scholz.com/academipad.

Will closing apps from the multitasking bar speed app your iPad and preserve battery? No - that's a myth. Save yourself the time and don't do it.
academiPad's insight:

I admit that I was one of those who cleared out the multitasking bar on the iPad in order to get some speed back. Then I wanted to write a post on how to speed up an aging iPad (because that's what I have), and to my surprise I found out that closing apps, in almost all cases, does absolutely nothing for you! Despite of most what you read online - it's a complete myth.
