Apps in Education: SAMR Model Using iPad Apps Poster

Apps in Education: SAMR Model Using iPad Apps Poster | academiPad | Scoop.it

If the SAMR model is new to you here is a brief explanation of the four letters that make it up:

S- Substitution - Tech acts as a direct tool substitute, with no functional change.
A - Augmentation - Tech acts as a direct tool substitute, with functional improvement.
M- Modification - Tech allows for significant task redesign.
R - Redefinition - Tech allows for the creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable.

The SAMR Model begins with Substitution (as in read the poster from the bottom up to more clearly understand the model), moving to Augmentation, then Modification and finishing with Redefinition.

The SAMR model is the work of Ruben R. Puentedura, Ph.D. from M.I.T. For more information on the SAMR model check out his website at http://hippasus.com/rrpweblog/.

For an indepth look you may want to check out the presentation from August 23, 2012 with the title "The SAMR Model: Background and Exemplars."

SAMR model list of suggested apps...

Shannon Soger's curator insight, January 7, 2014 7:46 PM

Great poster, but it's important to note that what you're doing with the app will depend what SAMR level the lesson is. Keynote CAN be at Modification, but it can also be used as Substitution. For example, if a student is typing an "About Me" slide in Keynote, the technology is simply acting as a direct tool with no functional change in the task. However, if a student created an "About Me" presentation in Keynote that contained Photo Booth pictures of his/her family, and video of a family tradition that would bring the lesson to Modification. The student could not have "brought his/family" into his presentation without the use of the technology.

Why Tablets?

Why Tablets? | academiPad | Scoop.it

Interesting read.... "Why tablets? I ask that question with all earnestness and interest in hearing your answers. Why should we provide tablets for students in K–12 and college (or more accurately in the case of the latter, encourage or expect their purchase)? The question of which computing device is right for students and schools to buy should be tied — obviously, I hope — to what they’re actually doing with these devices. Writing. Reading. Watching videos. Making videos. Coding. Creating. Gaming. And so on. Students’ devices should enable them to do all this and more. I worry that tablets enable less."

"I bought my iPad about eighteen months ago. I have said it before, and will say it again: it has changed my life! As an eLearning leader, one of the most common complaints I receive from staff is that “it is really hard to stay organized with the iPad! Everything is all over the place!” I could not disagree more. I have developed an arsenal of strategies and apps to help me stay organized (in addition to the standard Calendar, Mail and Reminders apps):"

App Developers Signal Apple Allegiance Ahead of WWDC and Google I/O

App Developers Signal Apple Allegiance Ahead of WWDC and Google I/O | academiPad | Scoop.it

Should your school adopt iPads, or are the latest Android tablets - some of them have better hardware for less money - a good alternative? In my opinion, the software is what matters. Hardware will change and be updated over the year, but you won't want to constantly switch you workflow and the apps that make it smooth. And when it comes to apps, Apple simply has the better eco system. Not only today, but most likely also in the years to come, as this report shows:

"Running a comparison of revenue generated by top apps on both iOS and Android, Flurry calculates that the difference in revenue generated per active user is still 4 times greater on iOS than Android. For every $1.00 a developer earns on iOS, he can expect to earn about $0.24 on Android. These results mirror earlier findings from similar analysis Flurry conducted in Q4 of 2011 and Q1 of 2012.

At the end of the day, developers run businesses, and businesses seek out markets where revenue opportunities are highest and the cost of building and distributing is lowest. In short, Android delivers less gain and more pain than iOS, which we believe is the key reason 7 out of every 10 apps built in the new economy are for iOS instead of Android."
