Kathleen Cercone's curator insight, May 5, 2013 11:14 AM

What is screencasting? Why would you want to record your computer screen, anyway? Well, I’m glad you asked! Recording what is happening on your screen can be a pretty useful tool for teachers who want to create video tutorials or presentations for their classrooms, and many teachers are usingscreencasting tools in their flipped classroom models

Two things I learnt from this scoopt:

1) Blogger might be closign down??? What's going, google? Is Search going to be the next one on the chopping block?

2) As a wordpress blogger, I am totally uncool. Check out these great blogging platforms that seem to transform your blog into your own personal socially networked facebook substitute (OverBlog) and that are so stylish that it hurts my eyes (Ghost)!

Track180 Wants to Bring You News You Haven't Already Seen

Track180 Wants to Bring You News You Haven't Already Seen | academiPad | Scoop.it
A new news app for the iPad is offering an in-depth look at some overlooked topics in a visually rich formula.
academiPad's insight:

This app could be well placed in between mainstream media (con: what Vicotia Beckham ate for lunch is more important than residents of an entire region in South Darfur didn't) and blogs (con: noise, redundancy, copy and paste "journalism"). It offers an in-depth look at a particular topic through a curation by professional journalists. Here is what Track180 wants to be:

"It's essentially an engagement platform to expose readers to all sides of an issue and help form opinions. And instead of trying to chase the tail of the ever-elusive tiger that is news, Track180 focuses on under-the-radar news that has not yet trended mainstream. Instead, it's more feature-y on the cusp material like the persecution of bloggers in Russia or human rights abuses. If you're looking for entertainment gossip and sports, this isn't the place for you."

David Levy's course at the University of Washington puts technology in its place—in the control of students.
academiPad's insight:

This article holds what I believe to be two of the most important things to be productive: medidation and monotasking.

It's a lengthy article, but reading it is very eye opening in how we want to live in a time of internet distraction and information abundance. Plus. it is already an exercise in monotasking - try to get through it without checking twitter! At the core, the idea is to focus your energy on one task at hand. Like in mediation, bring yourself back to the task when your mind wanders.

At the end of the article you are rewarded with a comprehensive list for further reading.

Fancy QR Code generator. Create and share your QR Codes. We have Premium plans for professionals !
academiPad's insight:

This is a totally amazing webpage to create your own custom design QR code - without any image editing skills whatsoever! And for FREE!

I discussed before how you can use QR codes in research and teaching (http://www.joachim-scholz.com/academipad/2012/12/25/qr-code-research-teaching/), but I spent 15 minutes in Pixelmator in order to make my own designer QR code. Okay, I spent a little longer to figure everything out, but once you know the way its about 15 minutes.

This webpage here can do an almost as good job in 15 seconds! Downside: The free version only lets you download your QR code in lower quality (mine was 56 KB). This is still good enoug for putting it on business cards. Maybe not the best for presentations, though. The it's back to Pixelmator / Photoshop.

Check it out and play around: the basic version (includes a mobile webpage) is FREE.

Blogger vs. WordPress.com: A Complete Comparison

Blogger vs. WordPress.com: A Complete Comparison | academiPad | Scoop.it
Not long ago I wrote a two-part series about the main differences between a self-hosted blog and the other option of using a “free” blogging service.

Via Ana Cristina Pratas
academiPad's insight:

How can you disseminate your research and have an online presence? Blogging is one great way to do so. This post compares two of the most favorite blogging sites: Wordpress.com and Blogger. Both are free.

I don't have much experience with Blogger, but when I started out I immediately focused on Wordpress.com. Why? Because there was an easy upgrade to running a more flexible, self-hosted blog using wordpress.org. I would do the same any day again, but read this comparison for yourself to decide via what platform you want to present yourself to the world.

Stop wasting time closing all apps in the multitasking bar

Stop wasting time closing all apps in the multitasking bar | academiPad | Scoop.it
Will closing apps from the multitasking bar speed app your iPad and preserve battery? No - that's a myth. Save yourself the time and don't do it.
academiPad's insight:

I admit that I was one of those who cleared out the multitasking bar on the iPad in order to get some speed back. Then I wanted to write a post on how to speed up an aging iPad (because that's what I have), and to my surprise I found out that closing apps, in almost all cases, does absolutely nothing for you! Despite of most what you read online - it's a complete myth.

Top 5 Google Reader Alternatives that work with Buffer - The Buffer Blog

As of July 1, 2013 Google will discontinue Google Reader and shut down the site. And this is good news!

Although at first I was at grief about the death of Google Reader I soon realized what lots of others have noted by now. The fact that Google Reader is dead is awesome. It will allow for lots of innovation in the space to happen that couldn’t before as Google Reader wasn’t changing.

Now new RSS sync services are coming up, and many of them are supporting Buffer (http://buff.ly/M2hZAU)

This post lists five alternatives that will keep the lights on once Google Reader has left the building. And best: They all work with Buffer, my facourite twitter and social media management app. Buffer (http://buff.ly/M2hZAU) lets you schedule your posts so that you can share your finds sparsed out throughout the day.

Stop wasting time closing all apps in the multitasking bar | academiPad | Scoop.it
Will closing apps from the multitasking bar speed app your iPad and preserve battery? No - that's a myth. Save yourself the time and don't do it.
academiPad's insight:

I originally intended to write a post on how to speed up the iPad (because mine is running slow), and most posts I read mentioned to manually shut down apps in the multitasking bar. Wrong! In most cases, it won't change a thing. Good thing I researched this thoroughly - I don't want to make the same mistake as so many other bloggers.

Still a little surprised that so many people believe in and tell this myth (even some people working as Genius for Apple), I decided to write this as its own post. Read it, you will be surprised. And: You will know for what few apps it makes sense to fiddle around in the multitasking bar.

The post I originally wanted to write about speeing up your iPad is coming soon on http://www.joachim-scholz.com/academipad.

Evernote vs. Google Keep: Which Does More?

Evernote vs. Google Keep: Which Does More? | academiPad | Scoop.it
Now that Google Keep is out, how does it compare against note taking juggernaut Evernote?
academiPad's insight:

Oh no! Jst about as I move into Evernote to round off my information management worklow, Google comes out with Keep. Now what is the better one? This post puts Evernote and Google Keep to a head-to-head race, just to find that Evernote is the more mature app (surprise) whose feature set is richer at the moment. Now long-term Evernote's advantage will most likely be reduced, and with Google's power and wide reach, it is also conceivable that Google Keep will excel in what Evernote is great as well: pretty much every serious app and web service integrates with Evernote.

So longterm you should keep an eye on Google Keep, if you are willing to trust Google with your notebook. Thats the killer for me, as usual. I don't trust Google. I don't use Google Mail, Google Calendar, or Google Docs. I rather keep that separate from my searches and map inquiries, which I believe give enough away of me already.

That's why I continue exploring Evernote.
