Lectures: Summers - Floating University

Lectures: Summers - Floating University | Academic Tech | Scoop.it

"How many people remember who ruled England when Chaucer wrote or when Milton wrote or when Shakespeare wrote or even when Dickens wrote? Lawrence Summers makes the compelling case that history is shaped by ideas and the spread of knowledge rather than empire and conquest."

Joe Magennis's insight:

Curated knowledge and the all important aspect of preservation will ensure that our culture is understood by future generations. I want to make sure that as the curated course materials evolve as our understanding of the content changes .. we don't lose site of the path that lead us there.

MOOCs, Large Courses Open to All, Topple Campus Walls

MOOCs, Large Courses Open to All, Topple Campus Walls | Academic Tech | Scoop.it

"We’re considering this still completely experimental, and we’re trying to figure out the right way to go down this road,” said John Etchemendy, the Stanford provost. “Our business is education, and I’m all in favor of supporting anything that can help educate more people around the world. But there are issues to consider, from copyright questions to what it might mean for our accreditation if we provide some official credential for these courses, branded as Stanford.”

Joe Magennis's insight:

Encountering alot of discussion about accreditation .. are we really talking about "quality control" now?

With nearly 10M members, Edmodo goes back to school with new version

With nearly 10M members, Edmodo goes back to school with new version | Academic Tech | Scoop.it

"A lot of people are talking about data — but there’s so much data at the classroom level that’s lost,” said Borg. Students constantly react to content introduced by teachers, he said, but it’s often difficult to record and track granular daily feedback to individual worksheets, reading assignments and tasks. With the new platform, each time a teacher posts new content, students can select from a menu of illustrated icons to indicate their reaction, from “tough/challenging” to “interesting” and more. Over time, teachers can use the information to monitor their classroom’s mood and how students are processing new content. Without waiting for tests and other major assessments, the insights can help teachers adjust the pace and figure out what to focus on for each student."

".. using data on how students are reacting to and learning from material, Borg said, Edmodo can begin to target content to teachers. It monitors the success of content used by classrooms across the system and dynamically suggests content to other teachers when they teach relevant lessons."

Joe Magennis's insight:

Some very relevant developments on this platform version.  Insights and discovery of content across the platform are two of the key elements that I have been discussing for a long time.

Learning the true value of content from Aaron Swartz — Remembering Aaron Swartz

Why does knowledge become an article in a journal—or that which fills a book or a publication—except for people to use it? And only when they use it does content become the tool it should be. Not using knowledge is an offense to it. If it cannot fly free beyond the confines of content, knowledge cannot reach its full value through collaboration, correction, inspiration, and use.

Joe Magennis's insight:

The spirit stays with us through the conversation, even if the body does not.

The Real Revolution Is Openness, Clay Shirky Tells Tech Leaders

The Real Revolution Is Openness, Clay Shirky Tells Tech Leaders | Academic Tech | Scoop.it

"There’s all kinds of hidden value in our systems which you can’t even understand until you open them up to see what people do with them,” Mr. Shirky said. “The thing that drives me craziest in conversations with large institutions about large data sets is they want to know in advance what will happen. Why should we open up our data? To which the answer is, you open up your data to see where the value is. It’s the value you can’t even predict until you try it that you get back.”

Joe Magennis's insight:

There have to be huge cultural shifts in organizations to allow this type of openess to happen. Initiatives will be hard to launch, but the benefits will be worth it.

How Social Media Can Spur Organizational Transformation - Forbes

How Social Media Can Spur Organizational Transformation - Forbes | Academic Tech | Scoop.it

"GE Aviation sought to build closer connections to customers. To do so, the company focused on first connecting sales and marketing people. Something as small as introducing an enterprise social network such as Salesforce Chatter and empowering employees to interact with one another to answer questions and solve problems streamlines customer engagement and improves relationships overall. As GE CMO Beth Comstock notes, “What might’ve taken a team – in the best case – a week, can now be done in minutes.”

Joe Magennis's insight:

Social is changing everything .. but incredibly difficult to get our arms around without serious strategic vision, content development, and commitment to carry through.

"The Georgia Institute of Technology has stripped, at least for now, more than 10 years of class work from its collaborative-learning Web sites, known as Swikis. The Technium: Post-Artifact Booking

The Technium: Post-Artifact Booking | Academic Tech | Scoop.it

"The primary shift is one of thinking of the book as a process rather than artifact. We are moving from the culture of the book to the culture of booking. Our focus is no longer on the book, the noun, but on booking, the verb -- on that continuous process of thinking, writing, editing, writing, sharing, editing, screening, writing, screening, sharing, thinking, writing -- and so on that incidentally throws off books"

Joe Magennis's insight:

The evolution and recursive nature of course material will allow us to view the development of knowledge over time. We will be able to trace our understanding from now into the future.

Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg | Academic Tech | Scoop.it

"Hart was best known for his 1971 invention of electronic books, or eBooks. He founded Project Gutenberg, which is recognized as one of the earliest and longest-lasting online literary projects. He often told this story of how he had the idea for eBooks. He had been granted access to significant computing power at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. On July 4 1971, after being inspired by a free printed copy of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, he decided to type the text into a computer, and to transmit it to other users on the computer network. From this beginning, the digitization and distribution of literature was to be Hart's life's work, spanning over 40 years."

It was Project Gutenberg that first caught my attention regarding the possibilities.

elearnspace › This kids, is why hallucinogenics and the internet don’t mix

"I’m not surprised that Blackboard is interested in openness. They’ve made overtures in the past. At the EDUCAUSE conference in October, they were clear that they wanted to partner with the open educational resources movement. I discussed this in a post on the race to platform education. At that point, Pearson had announced open class (look Ma, free LMS!). I’m still convinced that the only reason Open Class makes sense is because Pearson can mine the data of student interaction with their content – a critical piece they were missing. Perhaps Open Class will allow Pearson to sell more content, but that is secondary to having insight into what students actually do with the content. It’s Apple-esque in a way – control the learning process from end-to-end."

Joe Magennis's insight:

Good post, and the comments really contribute to this analysis.
