Just do it !

Poster on writing technique with no pictures or imagery - Title says there are 'rules', so we tend to check these out as we write first drafts & don't want to break the law! 1-10 points, straight forward info .... job done  ;-)

Jean Luc lebrun's curator insight, February 24, 1:29 AM

Diana Booher certainly knows her subject. Watch the video where she summarizes the points in her blog. She finishes with the counter-intuitive remark that "fear is not your enemy". I should comment on that. Fear is not your enemy. It is your judge. Did you prepare your talk long enough and thoroughly enough? Let fear be the judge. Did you take the opportunity to relate to your audience when you had time before the talk? Let fear be the judge. Did you let your speech become part of your long term experiential memory or did you rely on your fallible short term memory?  Let fear be the judge. What supports you at the beginning of your talk is not fear; It is the excitement of sharing a topic near and dear to you to people of influence - people able to process, digest, build on what you you will say. It is not adrenaline you need, it is dopamine. The pleasure of knowing you will make a difference in people's lives.

The Ideal Length of Everything Online | Social Media Today

The Ideal Length of Everything Online | Social Media Today | (Academic & Scientific) Poster Presentation | Scoop.it
Solid research exists to show the value of writing, tweeting, and posting at certain lengths. We can learn a lot from scientific social media guidelines like these. Here’s the best of what I found. The ideal length of a tweet is 100 characters. Whom should you trust when it comes to advice on the ideal length of a tweet? How about Twitter itself?

Jean Luc lebrun's curator insight, April 8, 4:35 PM

Do you want to know how blind rules of thumb are made? They are based on statistical analysis. Now statistics are good guides, they provide ranges. Rule makers take one number from one specific study, the average, then turn it into an ideal, a rule of thumb, and apply the rule across a range of situations different from the original one. A case in point: the rule which says that attention span of an audience is limited to 10 minutes is no true for TED events (18 minutes). TED presenters rehearse their presentations far more than the casual presenter.

Beware of rules of thumbs in scientific presentations - too much depends on the soft skill and the preparation of the presenter.
