Providing Feedback | Researched-Based Strategies | Focus on Effectiveness

Providing Feedback | Researched-Based Strategies | Focus on Effectiveness | Academic Research, Methods, Tools, Publishing | Scoop.it

Providing the right kind of feedback to students can make a significant difference in their achievement. There are two key considerations. First, feedback that improves learning is responsive to specific aspects of student work, such as test or homework answers, and provides specific and related suggestions. There needs to be a strong link between the teacher comment and the student's answer, and it must be instructive. This kind of feedback extends the opportunity to teach by alleviating misunderstanding and reinforcing learning. Second, the feedback must be timely. If students receive feedback no more than a day after a test or homework assignment has been turned in, it will increase the window of opportunity for learning. Feedback is a research-based strategy that teachers, and students, can practice to improve their success.

systerwoody's comment, February 4, 2013 11:30 AM
The challenge is in providing timely feedback spread across 3-4 courses with 25+ students each. Nearly impossible with writing intensive programs, which is a majority of doctoral programs. Sink or swim!

This is a useful site for the self-motivated learner. It suggests a range of content and will adapt to your interests. The learning mainly occurs through vocabulary translation and saving words to word lists while you are browsing and enjoying content. Includes songs, lyrics and complete movies.

How the brain pays attention

How the brain pays attention | Academic Research, Methods, Tools, Publishing | Scoop.it

"Members of Desimone’s lab are now studying how the brain shifts its focus between different types of sensory input, such as vision and hearing. They are also investigating whether it might be possible to train people to better focus their attention by controlling the brain interactions  involved in this process.

“You have to identify the basic neural mechanisms and do basic research studies, which sometimes generate ideas for things that could be of practical benefit,” Desimone says. “It’s too early to say whether this training is even going to work at all, but it’s something that we’re actively pursuing.”

Howard Rheingold's curator insight, April 15, 1:15 PM

Studies such as Nass et. al.'s "Cognitive Control in Media Multitaskers" have demonstrated on a general level that media multitaskers are actually rapidly task-switching and that the attentional costs of switching focus degrades efficiency in accomplishing individual tasks. But that research is just the beginning. Important to infotention is what is not yet known about how effective attentional training can be.
