Academic social network ResearchGate aids debunking of stem cell study

Academic social network ResearchGate aids debunking of stem cell study | Academic Research | Scoop.it
Berlin-based ResearchGate, in which Bill Gates is a prominent investor, provided a platform for study results that led to highly embarrassing backpedaling from a Japanese research institute.
Kayla Serrano's insight:

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, peer review as we know it is problematic in a variety of ways. Bill Gates says not exactly a paragon of openness and public-spiritedness is a major shareholder. For years, many of us have objected to the de facto ownership of publicly funded research by privately owned journals like Nature that charge exorbitantly for access. So I’d prefer this kind of thing happened in public venues like PubMed Commons.

Academic Freedom Is Academic Justice - Harvard Crimson

Academic Freedom Is Academic Justice
Harvard Crimson
In a recent column, Sandra Y.L. Korn '14 called for the suppression of research that opposes our deepest values.
Kayla Serrano's insight:

I agree with this article simply because of the fact that boycotts of Israeli institutions are very different. It is a real fight for academic freedom. When you have Palestinians who cannot go to universities, that's academic injustice. I think most can agree that this is morally wrong. However, we should permit academics to do research, anyway whether the results hurt our feelings.

What is going on in Venezuela?

What is going on in Venezuela? | Academic Research | Scoop.it
The world needs to know about the critical situation of Venezuela and to understand that the regime is taking every possible measure to oppress its people and cover the truth. If the only resource Venezuela has available to inform the world about what is happening is social media, then let's use it strategically to cause the greatest impact internationally.
Kayla Serrano's insight:

The government in Venezuela is centralizing power, censoring media, jailing, and torturing people, restricting spending abroad, promoting polarization and violence. The day of the youth which is on Feb 12 students take the streets in over 100 cities to protest this terrible cause. The Venezuelan police has injured 25 students and have killed students as well. The regime of Venezuela is doing everything in their power to oppress its people.

rafoth--why-visit-your-campus-writing-center.pdf

Kayla Serrano's insight:

Having finished my first semester of college English and having gone to my schools writing center I can say that it helped me tremendously. Given the fact that I was not a good writer, the tutors their at the writing center they all helped me out a lot and were very easy to talk too. One aspect that I liked the most was that I did not feel uncomfortable and I was able to have a productive conversation that helped me with my essays. The writing center is there to help you with any questions or doubts one might have, but most of all to help you become a better writer. Writing a paper is not the easiest thing to do, and having an extra hand for help is always a relief.

How do you improve your chances of getting an academic job?
Kayla Serrano's insight:

At the most fundamental level, departments want to know that you understand the rules of the game. What it takes to succeed as an academic. We need to find a way to show that we can get all this information into a application. If your letter basically says that you plan to publish your PhD, it raises the question of whether you will run out of motivation in a couple of years. But if you were to articulate better on, how the PhD fitted into that you look like a much safer bet.

Should university students use Wikipedia?

Should university students use Wikipedia? | Academic Research | Scoop.it
Most academics look down on the open source encyclopedia, but does it really hinder students' studies?
Kayla Serrano's insight:

This article rises up the question if college students should be allowed to use Wikipedia as a source? Throughout school and especially now being in college my professors always stress that we should not use Wikipedia as a reliable source given that articles can be written by anyone, not necessarily a world expert, editing and regulation are imperfect and a reliance on Wikipedia can discourage students from engaging with genuine academic writing.

dasbender--critical-thinking.pdf

Kayla Serrano's insight:

This article was about how to think critically. When most people hear the words critical thinking people often get scared because, they often think you have to criticize the text, disagree or even attack the writer. Heaving read the article critical thinking is the process to all fundamental disciplines. To think critically is also, to have a better understanding about the subject.
