Comparison of Online MOOC Versus On Campus Course Delivery | Academic Initiatives | Scoop.it

I report on the demographics and experiences of two cohorts of  students who completed an 8 week course. The cohorts include: 29,000 students who took the course via MOOC, and 100 students who took the course on campus at Georgia Tech. Of those students, the data is based on 879 respondents who completed the course online and 57 who completed the course on campus.  Both groups were provided the same curricula and were assessed according to the same criteria...

It is my view that one of the most significant statements made by George Siemens is this one: "As knowledge continues to grow and evolve, access to what is needed is more important than what the learner currently possesses." 

 

The role of teaching (and learning) then needs to shift in several ways to support this. How do we support students in selecting, discerning, organising this information and critically reflecting on it? How do we support students in creating new ways of evidencing their learning? How do we encourage students to create content themselves that adds to this growing and evolving abundance of information and knowledge generation?

 

"The Network is the Learning"....another of George Siemens' statements that resonates so well with me.

In a knowledge economy, the flow of information is the equivalent of the oil pipe in an industrial economy…

The pipe is more important than the content within the pipe. Our ability to learn what we need for tomorrow is more important than what we know today. A real challenge for any learning theory is to actuate known knowledge at the point of application. When knowledge, however, is needed, but not known, the ability to plug into sources to meet the requirements becomes a vital skill. As knowledge continues to grow and evolve, access to what is needed is more important than what the learner currently possesses.

Using technology to quiz students and stimulate interaction among them on a vast scale, Coursera, Udacity and edX, the three primary MOOC ventures, suddenly seemed to point the way to a new era of learning.

MOOCs began to grab the attention of many policymakers, not just educators, as a potentially effective but less expensive way to teach a big audience.

Online education has been around for decades at many universities. For-profit institutions such as the University of Phoenix started online programs as early as the 1980s. But these new MOOC ventures sparked huge interest because of prestigious names such as Stanford, Harvard and MIT, the sheer numbers and diversity of their enrollment, newer technology and the fact they offer courses for free, educators say.

They came on the scene amid a continuing economic recession and climbing tuition rates.

While these new MOOCs may still be seen as a way to learn for learning’s sake, talk now is about offering them for credit, which would contribute to the pursuit of degrees and even jobs.

The folks at the Atlanta Fed are much impressed by Instapundit Glenn Reynold’s argument that the higher education “bubble” can’t go on forever. According to Reynolds, colleges have two different strategic choices: increase the value of the education for the current cost, or lower the cost of providing the current level of value. And he expects the most common response will be the latter, likely involving technology such as MOOCs and other innovations in teaching methods.
