Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, August 7, 6:44 PM

There are two intertwined definitions of education and only one is included here. Educare is leading students out of child. Educere is allowing students to gain control over their learning and realizing they have support when needed. We have eliminated the latter replacing it with the instrumental version called learning which is what School is about.

Något nytt i denna artikel om det "nya" digitala samhället? #digiskol

Vanessa Camilleri's curator insight, August 21, 2:22 PM

People always seem to be complaining about this... our children are distracted... who wants to read when they can play games, but in effect children tend to copy their parents. By instilling a passion for reading from a young age we can try to balance out the claim that the young children do not like books or reading. One story a day... just like the apple, helps develop the creativity in children. It doesn't hurt by having the children making up their own stories and writing them together with their parents!

Susan Grigsby @sksgrigsby's curator insight, August 13, 3:16 PM

While I am now seeing less emphasis on "differentiation" and more emphasis on "personalized learning" as eduspeak, this is definitely worth reading so that you're on the same page as your teachers and admins. The library, by definition, is a differentiated space and that's a good conversation starter...

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, August 13, 4:46 PM

The key point for me was the first one. This is an old idea which is making another comeback. With all due respect to Carol Ann Tomlinson, others i.e. Dewey before her made us aware of the need to work individually with each student.

It does not take anything away from Tomlinson's work and it is important to keeping it on the front burner in School.

@ivon_ehd1

Susan Grigsby @sksgrigsby's comment, August 14, 4:13 PM
Agreed, Ivon. Effective teachers have always known that not all students learned or grasped the same way. Perhaps the important point is to remember this fact in our current climate of "same test, same day, same results" thinking.

A 1:1 iPad Menu For Guided Reading - te@chthought

A 1:1 iPad Menu For Guided Reading - te@chthought | AC Library News | Scoop.it

"Choice boards are powerful tools for providing students with both choice and direction in their work.

The idea, creatively shown below from teacher/blogger Monica Evon in the form of a menu, allows teachers to guide students towards certain forms of academic practice, or demonstration of specific standards. If, for example, you want students to show they understand how to calculate the area of a circle from real-life applications, you can create 8 different ways for them to show it."
