Selfie Elbow: Is This 'New' Tech Injury Really New?

'Selfie Elbow' they're starting to call it - But is it really a new kind of "Tech" injury caused by repeatedly taking selfie shots while holding ones phone - Or just Tennis Elbow Déjà vu?

TennisElbowClassroom's insight:

Is your elbow burning or does it feel like it's going to "get stuck" from taking so many selfie pics?

You may have an increasingly-common Repetitive Strain Injury, many are starting to call "Selfie Elbow" - labeling it a "new" kind of high-tech Repetitive Strain Injury (R.S.I.)

The only thing that's really new about it, though, is this relatively recent action of holding a phone up and repeatedly snapping selfie pics (20-30 times a day, apparentl.y)

Then again, an injury is an injury - It doesn't really matter what caused it. In this case it sounds a lot like good old Golfer's or Tennis Elbow!

Can You Get Tennis Elbow From Yard Work?

Can You Get Tennis Elbow From Yard Work? | About Tennis Elbow | Scoop.it
Yard work is a great way to get exercise in the fall.
TennisElbowClassroom's insight:

Yes, you can certainly develop Tennis Elbow (or Golfer's Elbow) from doing yard work, whether raking leaves, gardening or snow shoveling.

Suddenly doing a lot of something you're not conditioned or "used to" doing can be a recipe for muscle and tendon overload.

That overload or "over use" can result in simple muscle fatigue and soreness, tendon pain or outright tendon injury.

Think twice about following the common wisdom / standard advice offered in this news story, however - especially when it comes to ice, anti-inflammatory pills and braces.

These "treatments" are only going to mask your symptoms.

TennisElbowClassroom's insight:
How are you doing on the tennis court or the golf course this summer? Are you avoiding those annoying overuse injuries like Tennis or Golfer's Elbow, Rotator Cuff pain and so forth?

This article, quoting Dr. John Fatti, an Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in hand, wrist and elbow injuries, offers some basic advice on avoiding these injuries.

Things like  warming up the area - (literally, with a hot pack!) - stretching before playing, and icing afterward...

However, if an injury does result, then Dr Fatti defaults to pretty much what you'd expect an Orthopedist to recommend:

"One would be a cortisone injection, which would shrink, significantly, the inflammation in that area. Or a little bit more conservatively, taking a little bit longer, is a physical therapy program,"

But do your own research first before going anywhere near a Cortisone-filled-syringe-wielding Orthopedist! The long-term price for any short-term relief may not be worth it.

Inflammation is part of the healing process and not your enemy and Cortisone inhibits healing and weakens tendons.

Elbow And Shoulder Injuries In Tennis

Elbow And Shoulder Injuries In Tennis | About Tennis Elbow | Scoop.it
From Yahoo Sports Singapore: Tennis elbow occurs very uncommonly in professional players or experienced players. In particular, when the backhand is played using much of wrist movement, rather than a single flowing motion of the turning body, together with a properly positioned shoulder and elbow, with the racquet held with a firm wrist – this is when one becomes susceptible to tennis elbow. The diagnosis of tennis elbow is mainly a clinical one.
TennisElbowClassroom's insight:

Yes, "Tennis Elbow occurs very uncommonly in professional players or experienced players." Statistically, that's true.

And the biomechanical technique-related description of the cause of the injury sounds right to me...

But having personally treated many experienced tennis players with Tennis Elbow (and Golfer's Elbow) I think it's more accurate to say that the injury is uncommon - but not "very" uncommon - among that population.

(So don't be too surprised if you're an experienced tennis player and you end up with Tennis or Golfer's Elbow!)

Shoulder Impingement Syndrome Demo [VIDEO]

http://www.steadmanhawkinscc.com Dr. Richard Hawkins with the Steadman Hawkins Clinic discusses shoulder impingement and it's treatment options. ©ORFC 2010

TennisElbowClassroom's insight:

Impingement Syndrome is a gradual, cumulative injury involving the upper-most Rotator Cuff Tendon, the 'Supraspinatus.'

It's a vicious cycle that can occur and get serious fairly quickly in a sport like tennis, because tennis involves so much repetitive, dynamic shoulder activity - Especially the overhead activity inherent in the service motion.

Making Impingement (and other Rotator Cuff Tendinopathies) one of the most common types of injury suffered by tennis players.

This is an excellent 3D demo by Dr Richard Hawkins, and here are my additional thoughts on it:
