Impressed with CL3VER's evolution, at one point they had were "just another webgl viewer" but they have refined their feature set and functionality and targeted primarily Architects for effective communications. They've also streamlined their product. And have teamed up with companies such as bim+

A couple of weeks ago, I attended the annual US AIA Convention and Expo that was held in Atlanta this year. I was attending this event in person after a gap of three years—see my two-part series on AIA 2012 in AECbytes Newsletters #57 and #58—and what struck me the most was the increasing “architecture-specific” nature of the technology products exhibited at the Expo. In the early days of BIM and IPD, the AIA showcased a lot more technology products that were applicable to the entire spectrum of building design, construction, and facilities management; but now, it seems like the distinction between the tools architects are likely to use versus the tools used by the other building professionals has become more marked, given that it was mostly the former that were showcased at this year’s AIA. While this makes sense to a certain extent—it is an architecture-specific conference after all—the contrast between the current genre of tools that were exhibited compared to the more expansive set of technologies that were showcased in the past seems to be going against the entire notion of integration that BIM and IPD are supposed to nurture. It is certainly quite a conundrum.

A few years ago, when asked the question, “Are you designing in BIM?” most people would have answered, “Yes.” They had purchased a license or two of Autodesk® Revit®, they had created 3D content, and they had occasionally written some descriptive text in a parameter field. So we have a building “B,” we put some information in a field “I,” and it’s a model “M.” It must be BIM.

 

In 2008, on average, when everyone began the adoption of Revit and three-dimensional design modeling, most firms were creating two-dimensional plans with three-dimensional programs. Meaning it did not matter whether the duct or pipe was drawn through the steel or below the ceiling because as long as the two-dimensional drawings looked correct, the goal was accomplished.

For those who have done their homework and prepared for the implementation, it should be a relatively smooth process. Remember the AEC dotcom boom and subsequent bust during the late 1990s to early 2000s when over 150 companies were all developing some version of an AEC collaboration portal? We even had a dedicated conference, AEC Systems, specifically for showcasing these solutions. While most of these solutions are now defunct along with the conference itself, the need for a collaboration solution in the AEC industry is stronger than ever, given the growing size and complexity of projects and the increasing number of disciplines and firms that need to be involved. One such solution is Aconex, which actually goes all the way back to the AEC dotcom days but fortunately escaped their fate. Perhaps this was because the company that developed it, also called Aconex, was started in Australia, “far from the madding crowd” of AEC dotcoms funded by Silicon Valley venture firms. Aconex has not only survived since it was started but has actually thrived, and is now a public company in Australia. This review explores the solution in more detail and attempts to understand what accounts for its growing adoption and success in the construction and engineering industries, particularly when so many other collaboration solutions have failed even to survive, let alone gain traction...

Introduction to Revit Macros, Part 2 | AUGI

In my previous article, “Introduction to Revit Macros,” which appeared in the November 2014 issue of AUGIWorld, I outlined the basics of writing macros in Revit. In this follow-up article I will step through a macro that was made specifically for my previous company, an MEP firm. The macro is for use during project setup to create views for each of the MEP disciplines.

The macro, called “CreateMEPViews,” will create several discipline views for each level in the model. I built this macro because I was spending hours setting up large projects in Autodesk® Revit®. The process of duplicating a view, renaming it, and applying a view template for every discipline for every level in the model is very time consuming, especially on large, multi-story projects..

How does BIM work, like really work, in the real world?

There are a proliferation of diagrams with arrows and graphics invariably arranged in a circle, or as a seamless flow.


But none of these are explanations of how BIM actually works, they are blueprints of how the authors think BIM should work.
It is an attempt to promote the myth that "BIM is about process, not technology", so that you will use the standard, guide, paid advice or academic career being pushed.

BIM does involve some new and different processes, but try doing it without technology. It would go from being a highly efficient process to one that involves an enormous amount of  work and time that is error prone and tedious. Basically the benefits would evaporate...

For design intent models or simple documentation to really be useful and helpful in driving construction, contractors need new levels of information.  This new information must account for means and methods, materials, and how project components come together. “Constructability” is what you need, and Autodesk Revit 2016 is the tool to get you there.

 

In new construction, lack of construction detail can limit the usefulness of a model detail. Many times architects create concrete walls, floor slabs, and roofs as a single object or objects without connection details.

BIM managers have tasks they perform on a regular basis, whether on a single Autodesk® Revit® model or on multiple Revit models. Many of these tasks are repetitive and can become boring after doing the same task over and over. Luckily, Revit has a solution to this with its integrated Macro system. There are many tasks that can be automated such as model setup, model cleanup, view/sheet creation and duplication, quality control checks, parameter validation, and much more.

 

Before proceeding any further, I want you to know that I’m not a professional developer and I have only been writing macros in Revit for a little over a year as of this writing. I learned how to create macros by trial and error. If I can learn this way, I believe just about anyone else can also. My process has been to identify a task to automate or a problem to solve. I then break down the steps to solve using Revit as normal (if possible) and then I set out to solve it in a similar way through a macro.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 29, 2015—Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) announced today that it is working with Microsoft to develop a new generation of tools, integrated with the HoloLens holographic platform on Windows 10, which are intended to improve quality, collaboration and efficiency in the design, construction and operation of buildings and structures. A proof of concept was demonstrated at Microsoft’s Build Developer Conference held this week in San Francisco.

 

Microsoft HoloLens is a head-mounted, holographic computer that provides a mixed-reality experience for a range of commercial and consumer applications. When used by architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) professionals, the HoloLens device extends interaction with 3D models beyond the confines of a 2D computer screen, creating new ways for the many stakeholders of complex, multi-phase construction projects to visualize, collaborate, share ideas and manage change.

The What's New documentation for Revit 2016 doesn't mention this but if you look closely you'll find that it provides new door families separated into Residential (19 each) and Commercial (16 each) folders. The residential doors all use Type Catalogs except for the two garage doors (you can see them in the second image below). Revit 2015's Doors folder has 31 doors and Revit 2016 provides 35 (and another 12 you'll see below, for total of 47)...

Transitioning from existing technologies to new ones or implementing new technologies usually poses a challenge during the implementation phase for many reasons. If you are already familiar with the previous technology, in this case regular AutoCAD® as a drafting and design platform, the transition might be not so hard. However, if you are just getting familiar with the AutoCAD environment your learning curve might be steeper. But either way, transitioning to AutoCAD® Civil 3D® is worth the effort, and once you try it you cannot go back. I know there is more than one flavor of AutoCAD and I think regular AutoCAD will always have its place, but if you use it in civil engineering, land development, or a related field, then AutoCAD Civil 3D is for you...
