Helping 2D Subcontractors in a 3D World | AUGI

Helping 2D Subcontractors in a 3D World | AUGI | BIM WORLD | Scoop.it
I have worked on many projects for design and construction firms creating and providing training on BIM processes. Throughout this time I have noticed, as I’m sure most of us have, some apprehension to implement and utilize this type of technology. Although BIM has shown great returns for many projects, the implementation has been slow in developing. This slow development has contributed to companies of all sizes putting BIM on the back burner in anticipation of a sure thing or at least knowing that they have been successful in doing what they have always done..

In Defense of Traditional 3D Laser Scanning

In Defense of Traditional 3D Laser Scanning | BIM WORLD | Scoop.it

Reality capture is the term used to describe various types of technology used to collect 3D data of environments and objects. The three main types—photogrammetry, infrared scanning, and laser scanning—all effectively “capture reality,” but with varying degrees of quality, accuracy, and range. With rapid developments in 3D scanning technology over the past thirty years, capture is now faster and easier than ever, taking form in high definition terrestrial systems, aerial photogrammetry systems, handheld infrared systems, and everything in between.

From Napkin Sketches to Revit

From Napkin Sketches to Revit | BIM WORLD | Scoop.it
Beginning with a napkin and a conveniently available Ideate pen, I quickly sketched out an idea for a restaurant.

After I had my sketch, I took a picture with my smartphone (previously I would have handed the sketch to the drafter), and sent it to my computer via Bluetooth, (back in the day it might have been sent by facsimile machine). Note as long as your image is a .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, or .tif file, you can import it into Revit...

How Usable are BIM Standards?

This month the UK Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) published an article in their BIM+ blog.
Titled LEVEL 2 STANDARDS: CREATING CONSISTENCY OR CAUSING COMPLEXITY? it is a series of interviews with people involved in having to use BIM.
It is a timely and interesting article, and as regular readers of my blog will appreciate, close to my heart. A sample:
“People like me are invited on seminars and conferences and sent papers on BIM, but the information isn't easy to navigate,” he says. “It is made to sound more complicated than it really is and I'm having difficulty understanding what it is I have to do that I am not already doing."
Equally interesting are the comments on a LinkedIn group discussion about the article. Many thought those complaining about BIM standards simply didn't get BIM, and furthermore don't want to. Discussion on whether the contents of current BIM standards are good or bad seems to be not only avoided, but shut down.
Do I think BIM standards are unnecessarily complex? You bet. I also believe they are inadequate.

ArchiCAD 20: AECbytes Review

ArchiCAD 20: AECbytes Review | BIM WORLD | Scoop.it

The new version of ARCHICAD—typically released by GRAPHISOFT around this time every year—was formally launched at a first-of-its-kind “LiveSteam” event this year, in which the live physical launch held in Budapest was simultaneously broadcast online and therefore available all over the world. (A recording of this event can be seen at: http://www.graphisoft.com/archicad20-livestream/.) Those familiar with ARCHICAD know that each new release of ARCHICAD revolves around a theme, and for ARCHICAD 20 this was “A Fresh Look at BIM,” which has been achieved by a revamped interface, a significant improvement in adding and managing model information, and the ability to bring in conceptual designs created in Rhino and Grasshopper to jumpstart the detailed design process. Let’s explore each of these enhancements in more detail, starting with the Rhino/Grasshopper integration.

hsbModel – Disassemble Revit Models into Connectable Panels Fit for 3D Printing | BIM WORLD | Scoop.it
hsbcad’s hsbModel is an add-in for Autodesk® Revit® that enables you to decompose a Revit building model into logical, scaled elements, print them on a standard 3D printer, and then assemble the model by clicking or gluing the elements together.

hsbModel can print Revit models on a large scale by splitting up objects that can be visually viewed in the building model, modifying them, and adding clickable connections to them.

Benefits for Building a 3D Model with a Solid VDC and BIM Project Management Plan

Benefits for Building a 3D Model with a Solid VDC and BIM Project Management Plan | BIM WORLD | Scoop.it
If you think that a Project Execution Plan is simply used to highlight how to handle, store and share your models, think again. The Project Execution Plan is much more than that. Even before design starts, the project team (including GC’s VDC – Virtual Design Construction team) and all major stakeholders must reach consensus about the project management processes needed for the project execution plan. The overall goal is to set the stage for a clear implementation strategy from design through to construction. Here are some thoughts, ideas and best practices about how to benefit from good planning for VDC/BIM uses.

While the larger objective of the company is to “transform the way people create and use information about commercial buildings”— which might eventually involve the development of additional products—the focus of BIM Assure at the moment is to check the quality of a BIM model to ensure that it is accurate and contains all the data that will be needed for the purpose for which the model is being created
