In the lead up to International Literacy Day, CODE is proud to announce the finalists for its inaugural Burt Award for First Nations, Métis and Inuit Literature.

 

The shortlisted titles, selected by a jury composed of Canadian writers administered by the Canada Council for the Arts, are (in alphabetical order):

 

·         As Long as the Rivers Flow by James Bartleman (published by Random House of Canada Ltd.)

 

·         Free Throwby Jacqueline Guest (published by James Lorimer & Company)

 

·         Shadows Cast by Starsby Catherine Knutsson (published by Simon & Schuster)

 

·         As I Remember It by Tara Lee Morin (published by Theytus Books)

Joleen Paul is graduating with her Bachelor of Education degree and is now in a unique position to benefit her First Nations community. Paul was recently granted permission by the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development to have her First Nation’s language of Maliseet recognized as a public school teachable subject. This will allow the language to be maintained within the province as it’s passed on to new generations of readers, writers, and speakers.

Renae Morriseau, recently named the Vancouver Public Library’s 2016 aboriginal storyteller in residence, is ready to share the diverse cultural realities of Canada’s First Nations with anyone who is ready to listen. Originally from Winnipeg, and of Cree and Saulteaux descent, Morriseau calls herself a “settler on Coast Salish shores”, having made Vancouver her home 30 years ago. She is the program’s seventh storyteller.

Not long ago my partner was attending an Aboriginal healing function when she found out there was going to be a women’s ceremony included, one that she had not been told about in advance.... Her immediate first thought dealt with the fact she hadn’t brought along the proper attire, specifically a long skirt that fell to her ankles.  It is usually what is worn by women to take part in such spiritual ceremonies
