"Games of Survival presents a series of traditional Inuit games that were used to support skills in agility, strength and endurance - all key capabilities for surviving as an Inuit in the Arctic. For those of us who do not live within the Far North, we've only seen snippets of these games when reported on the news during the annual Arctic Winter Games, a circumpolar sports competition held every two years. Without understanding the rationale, rules or methodology, I know that what I saw requires incredible athleticism. Now, with Games of Survival, my understanding has increased substantially."

"The latest houseware trend is classic Americana — and a real conversation piece.
Just ask Bushwick resident Mariette Lamson, whose unique living room decor stunned one of her pals during a recent visit. “You seriously have a tepee in your apartment?” the surprised friend said in amazement. "

"From one of Canada's most exciting new Metis voices comes a book whose recurring themes include the complexities of identity, belonging/not belonging, Aboriginal adoption, loss and abandonment, regret and insecurity. A deadbeat dad tries to reconnect with his daughter after 22 years away. A selfish poet has been scarred by an upbringing that leaves him emotionally distant from his children and spouse. A pot-smoking middle-aged man undertakes a modest quest for meaning following a brush with mortality. A fourteen-year-old girl struggles to come to terms with her feelings of abandonment. The characters are often fragile, sometimes unlikeable, but ultimately can be identified or sympathized with. At the centre of the stories are notions of identity and belonging, and the complex relationships between children and parents, both those who are real and those who are just pretending." "Told in the words of Isaac, a Choctaw boy who does not survive the Trail of Tears, HOW I BECAME A GHOST is a tale of innocence and resilience in the face of tragedy. From the book's opening line, "Maybe you have never read a book written by a ghost before," the reader is put on notice that this is no normal book. Isaac leads a remarkable foursome of Choctaw comrades: a tough-minded teenage girl, a shape-shifting panther boy, a lovable five-year-old ghost who only wants her mom and dad to be happy, and Isaac s talking dog, Jumper. The first in a trilogy, HOW I BECAME A GHOST thinly disguises an important and oft-overlooked piece of history." Release date: June 18, 2013 Publisher: The RoadRunner Press ISBN: 978-1937054533

"No group in American culture has been more stereotyped than Native Americans. While other ethnic stereotypes now meet with disapproval, harmful images of native people are still accepted or defended within majority culture, even when Native Americans complain. There are images and characters in books and other media, expressions in current usage, the naming of places and sports teams, and negative expectations about the behavior of Native Americans. It is so pervasive that non-natives often don’t realize they’re saying or doing things hurtful to Native Americans. (And when it is pointed out, the response is often disbelief or denial.) Opening May 15, 2013- "One of the highlights of this project is a beautiful space designed specifically for the adult Aboriginal Resources Area, featuring hundreds of titles about First Nations, Métis, and Inuit topics (non-fiction, fiction, poetry, graphic novels, language-learning and more!),... including many titles by indigenous writers. Created with the input of Anishinaabe interior designer Destiny Seymour, and using imagery and materials of significance to a number of indigenous cultures, this light-filled space welcomes people of all backgrounds who are interested in learning more about First Nations, Métis and Inuit topics. We also look forward to hosting great programming in this space. Elders, Barbara and Clarence Nepinak, will be on hand to offer words of welcome, and we’ll also have some fun craft activities for children. So be sure to bring the whole family. And, of course, we’ll have a librarian on hand to answer any questions you may have about accessing these great resources! The renovation of the second floor was made possible by a bequest from the estate of Mr. John Grant McDonald, a long-time library user. We are truly grateful for his generosity."
