Trades and Tech Gala for aboriginal girls planned - GNB

FREDERICTON (GNB) – Young New Brunswick aboriginal women are invited to attend a Trades and Tech Gala for Girls from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, at Willie O'Ree Place in Fredericton.

The event will be promoting careers in sectors where women have been traditionally under-represented.

"We are offering this event specifically for high school-aged aboriginal girls, to give them an opportunity to meet fascinating women who work in a broad range of careers," said Justice Minister and Attorney General Marie-Claude Blais, who is also minister responsible for women's issues. "By promoting skilled trades and technologies as future career paths for aboriginal girls, we can empower them to explore all opportunities before deciding on a field of study."
These galas are offered across the province by the Women's Issues Branch in partnership with Irving Oil; NB Power; the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 37; Women in Nuclear, New Brunswick chapter; Skills Canada – New Brunswick; Enterprise Saint John; and the Joint Economic Development Initiative.

The events provide an opportunity for high school girls to be introduced to female mentors who work in skilled trades and technologies. During the luncheon, students will have a chance to learn about each mentor's career journey and experiences and be entered in a contest to win an iPad.
"Aboriginal women and girls face unique challenges and continue to be under-represented in many occupations," said Blais. "We can change the landscape of our province's workforce by encouraging aboriginal girls to explore the many career opportunities available to them. By continuing to empower these strong, passionate and committed girls, we are contributing to the next generation of women leaders in this province."

Those interested in attending are asked to contact Kate McLean or Annick Noël at 506-453-8126, kate.mclean@gnb.ca, annick.noël@gnb.ca.
