For Dawnis Kennedy, learning to speak Ojibwe is about so much more than just learning a language. “I want to be who I was born to be,” said 38-year-old Kennedy, who is of Ojibwe decent. “And without the language how do I understand that and see that?”
Kennedy spent last week taking part in the Language Immersion Camp at the University of Winnipeg’s Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre.

It was the kind of meeting where eyes sometimes get opened and hearts sometimes get broken.
And although, in many ways, the speakers at a forum called Confronting Environmental Racism in Nova Scotia were preaching to the converted Tuesday night at the Halifax Central Library, it was all about getting people to talk about the issue.
Dorene Bernard, whose Mi’kmaq name means “She loves her Indian ways,” recalled a number of examples wherein environmental racism was demonstrated in First Nation communities across Nova Scotia.
