Aboriginal video game puts modern twist on tradition of storytelling - CTV Montreal

Aboriginal video game puts modern twist on tradition of storytelling - CTV Montreal | AboriginalLinks LiensAutochtones | Scoop.it

"Using a modern twist to honour centuries-old traditions, a new video game  designed by young people from Kahnawake uses Mohawk legends as inspiration.

The product of a video game design workshop at Concordia Uiversity,  Skahiòn:hati: Rise of the Kanien'kehá:ka Legends, tells the story of a man who  must fight a Stone Giant, Tree People and the Flying Head on his path to  becoming a warrior.

.....

Young people between the ages of 18 and 25 from Kahnawake spent a combined  total of 350 hours creating the game, which  can be downloaded here.

The focus was on a positive portrayal of their proud heritage."

A First Nations story, gracefully told by Richard Wagamese

A First Nations story, gracefully told by Richard Wagamese | AboriginalLinks LiensAutochtones | Scoop.it
Respect is one thing; attention is quite another.
Despite a long and rightly lauded career, Richard Wagamese has never received the attention his work so richly deserves. A multiple prizewinner, Wagamese’s books have inexplicably slipped just under the surface of public awareness (and don’t get me started on how his last novel Indian Horse, one of the best books of 2012, somehow failed to appear on the radar of the major literary prizes, an oversight which still makes me reel).

Guest Post: Joseph Bruchac on "You Don't Look Indian."

By Joseph Bruchac for Cynthia Leitich Smith's Cynsations
"You don’t look like an Indian.
Ever heard anyone say that? It’s a safe bet that you have if you’re a contemporary Native American. Or, as my friends in Canada put it, a member of a First Nation. And those were the exact words that I heard this past Saturday. Standing in front of a group of fifty sixth and seventh graders at Henry Hudson Middle School (And no, I shall not go into a rant about its namesake right now) in the Bronx. "
