There is actually more to racing games than most people assume. The number of different variations to racing video games is what has kept this genre alive.
It’s hard to single out genre out as the best as most of them have their own appeal. One sub-genre might not appeal to one person despite being loved by another.
Below is a list of some of the sub-genres of racing and examples for each type.
Arcaderacing video games
Arcade racing video games are called “arcade” because the controls and physics are not really too realistic. On the contrary,

in an arcade racing video game is likely to be very easy.
There’s a lot of hand holding in these sorts of racing video games. These games do not penalize players as much as the more realistic driving simulators. It is this accessibility which makes this sort of racing games so popular with gamers.
Some racing arcade games even award players points for causing destruction. The burnout series is very well known for how easy it is to crash into something. The physics of a high speed collision in this game is just amazing and spectacular.
The karting sub-genre
More than a decade ago a game known as Mario Kart was released for the Super Nintendo. The game featured the characters from Super Mario Bros. as racers on go-karts. Like arcade games, the physics was simple and the levels and tracks were very imaginative.
What made Mario Kart such a hit was that it allowed players to pick up items while they were racing. The items, or powerups as they were called, allowed players to basically do two things. They could either speed up their own progress or use the powerup to hinder the progress of others.
The end result of the formula was a fantastic joy ride for players who tried to outdo one another not just through driving, but avoiding attacks from another.
The motorcycle racers
Motorcycle racing video games was a genre that filled more of a niche among racing gamers. What makes motorcycle games so interesting, at least in the arcades, is that there was an actual motorcycle.
There’s a lot more to motorcycle riding than meets the eye. Knowing how to ride a bicycle does not qualify a person to ride a motorcycle. The nice thing about motorcycle
is that it gave players a good feel of what it was like to ride a motorcycle without causing real life threatening injuries whenever they crashed.
